JUST PUBLISHED: Trump's announced tariffs—25% on Mexico & Canada (besides Canadian energy, at 10%) + a 10% increase in tariffs on China—would be the largest tax increase in at least a generation. It would cost the median US household more than $1,200 a year. #PIIECharts

The interesting thing for me as a trade scholar and GATT geek is that the US has adopted a blanket rule (25% on everything) vs Canada’s targeted list. And in all of this news I have seen exactly ZERO mention of the WTO or even USMCA trade dispute resolution fora. None.

Having just spent 3 days at a Canadian science policy conference, it was frustrating to see such limited social sciences and humanities representation; even though I work in the housing and public infrastructure space, I had hoped for more. Hm.

There's a lot of talk about how Trump's tariffs may help revive American manufacturing by encouraging consumers to buy American-made goods. If you believe this, I want to tell you a story. 🧵

Unfortunately, I am looking at another unsuccessful year on the academic job market. I’m trying to hold onto the dream of being a professor, or even a postdoc. The applications continue, as does seeking permanent employment since my current contract ends in May.

Working a contract 9-5, M-F job that pays biweekly has been life changing. For 9 years I’ve been paid monthly, sometimes unreliably. And for 9 years I had to fight to reserve at least Saturdays for myself/life chores. That first paycheck after 6 months of being unemployed also hit different.

Supporting Women in International Political Economy Conference
April 12, 2024
The one-day conference has three primary aims: 1) present innovative work on international
political economy, 2) create opportunities for networking and feedback within and across levels
of seniority, 3) provide space to articulate challenges (and strategies for addressing these
challenges) particular to women (and non-binary) scholars working in IPE. By connecting
women at different stages of their careers, the conference will help foster new connections
and conversations about career advancement and opportunities in the field of IPE.
The conference will feature panels of junior scholars with senior discussants, a roundtable
on academic careers in IPE, and happy hour and dinner for informal conversations.
Submissions: We are soliciting submissions on topics in international political economy
from junior (defined as post-PhD, pre-tenure) women and non-binary scholars.
