Gearing up for my very first Trashcano! (I know, only ~15 yrs late on this.) Any tips or words of wisdom from those who have done it? The plan is no food coloring, just water and ping pong balls; and it's for an outreach event, so not a big quantitative lesson (but I could do a little worksheet?).

My township capped reported IQ scores at something like 140 or 150, because they only used the testing to identify kids who likely needed extra help. The kids with high scores (and whose parents told them that) couldn’t argue about their (meaningless) numbers. In retrospect, a very good policy.

Have spent the whole day mowing, trimming weeds, and doing various farm maintenance here on our property. Tomorrow I'll take the dog to the sheep farm for his herding lesson. This is apparently my life now!
Happy dog sitting in front of a fence. A woman in a blue jacket walks with a small black dog towards a few sheep in the background. The fence has a sign that says "Herding Test."

If you’re going to make a very long drive, @aptshadow.bsky.social’s Dogs of War is a particularly good audiobook choice. I usually prefer reading books, and mostly listen instead just because it helps my commute. But the audio version may really be superior with this one!

Update: the Airbnb host of the condo in Montreal where I got bedbug bites every night has written to tell me their exterminator inspected it, there is no sign of bugs, and I should “see a dermatologist.” How professional!

A clip from a freight train stopped in a wildfire near Armstrong, Ontario. Thankfully, the crew escaped safely. Wildfire is nothing new but the burning of fossil fuels is making them larger, more frequent and severe.

Haven’t seen any chatter about this? But I am having my second bedbug encounter in under a year (currently in Montreal; the last was brought home from DC, and we successfully nipped it in the bud). Are there worsening outbreaks all over lately? I’m itchy.

Tip: if you keep your GPS maps oriented north instead of always using the street view, it forces you to learn an area and build a mental map almost as effectively as paper maps do, and you can still get directions. It’s mildly uncomfortable at first, but brains adjust very quickly.

This is a terrible disaster. Magnitude 7.5 earthquake in Venezuela, minutes after another M7.2. More than half a million people exposed to “severe or violent” shaking, and best estimates suggesting tens of thousands may have been killed earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/...

The fault-plane solutions for these quakes are consistent with steeply dipping strike-slip faults, which makes sense given the geodynamic setting of northern Venezuela. The first quake has been localised to 10.387°N 68.520°W, at a depth of 21.9 km. The second was at 10.453°N, 68.514°W, 10 km deep.

There have been two enormous earthquakes in Venezuela, likely causing catastrophic damage and loss of life. The first of the doublet was Mw 7.2, 24 km ENE of the city of San Felipe. The second, at Mw 7.5 almost three times stronger than the first, struck 39 s later 23 km SE of the town of Yumare.

This is the best tectonic map of the area I've been able to dig up. These earthquakes occur in the region where the strike-slip boundary between the Caribbean and South America plates bifurcates. The Oca-Ancon system continues W along the coast; the Bocono Fault runs to the SW inland.
Double panel figure showing the Caribbean-South American plate boundary on top, then on the bottom zooming into the region in Venezuela where the boundary fault bifurcates. Rough location of the June 2026 earthquake doublet - roughly at the point of bifurcation - has been added to the bottom figure.

Interesting. I'd always heard Elk Creek wasn't even this REE-rich, and I wonder what parts are included to get total tonnages this high. It's not a simple intrusion, and also not a case where REE price meant Nb was considered a secondary deposit. It's extremely Nb-rich; that's the primary ore.
