⚡ Today, we co-hosted a side event at the First Conference to Transition Away From Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, Colombia, featuring parliamentarians, Indigenous Peoples and civil society organizations to dive into key financial roadmaps towards a #JustTransition and a fossil-free Amazon. 🧵 #GreenSky
Group photos from our side event, “Financial Roadmaps: Toward a Just Phaseout And a Fossil Free Amazon”, at the First Conference to Transition Away From Fossil Fuels in Santa Marta, Colombia. Text reads “Takeaways from our Santa Marta event “Financial Roadmaps Towards a Just Phaseout and a Fossil Free Amazon”. Arrow icon in top right corner.Photo of Stand.earth Senior Climate Finance Campaigner Martyna Dominiak in front of the welcome sign for the event. Quote reads "Most of the banks [financing oil and gas projects in the Amazon] are headquartered in the Global North.
The overall number of financing that we were able to trace directly to Amazon oil and gas is $15 billion in the last 10 years."
Photo of Luene Karipuna, Executive Coordinator of Articulação dos Povos e Organizações Indigenas do Amapá e Norte do Pará (APOIANP). Quote reads "The exploration process in the Equatorial Margin began without any prior consultation with us, Indigenous Peoples. What we need is investment to protect the forest defenders and to strengthen sustainable Indigenous economies — that is where banks should be investing. The Brazilian Indigenous movement has already put forward pathways for a just global transition. One of them is clear: recognizing Indigenous territories as fossil-free zones." Group photo from event with arrow pointing to Olivia Bisa Tirko, President of the Chapra Nation. Quote reads “"I often hear in political speeches the question 'what will happen if we run out of money?', but almost no one asks what will happen if we run out of life. If banks do not stop financing [fossil fuel expansion], no policy - no matter how well it sounds - will make a difference... We all share responsibility for caring for the planet. If we do not act now, we will be complicit in our own destruction because we all depend on the Earth”.

The #SantaMarta conference ended with the 57 participating countries agreeming to keep charting a path to fossil fuel phaseout! And to work to solve barriers like debt and intl trade regimes 🙌 I personally see that as a raging success. Heading back home tired but happy

Such a joyful, powerful, sweaty march today in #SantaMarta at the first-ever transitioning away from fossil fuels conference. High level mtgs with 60+ gov’t start tomorrow - here’s hoping their discussions are as rich & concrete as the ones civil society, academics & Indigenous ppl have been in.

In Santa Marta, 60+ countries are beginning the monumental task of charting a pathway off fossil fuels. But they’re not alone – 1000+ others are here from social movements, academics, Indigenous leaders, NGOs & more to articulate priorities for the transition. It’s pretty damn inspiring ☀️

Step 2 in #santamarta: say hello to the ocean. The government of Colombia chose this location in part because it’s a coal export port, which sends an important message that even countries currently dependent on fossil fuels can set a path to transition away 👏🏻
