I’ve seen too much, naive optimism doesn’t hit the same. But seasoned optimism…

At the end of the day, it is a movement that is anti-choice and anti-love. They want to return to a time when marriage was based on social standing, economics, and submission. A time when a woman was a purchase.

Middle classness has its own cultural codes. It’s rubbed off on me in some ways through my education, but sometimes I still feel the difference. We’re in the same place, but we have different priorities, and senses of urgency.

Part of the discomfort I have with TSwift is that when I talk to people who are fans of hers, they seem to not be introspective in a way that mirrors Swift’s persona; there’s like a defensive snarkiness I associate with toxic white femininity

From Terry Eagleton’s “The Significance of Theory” (1990): “Power succeeds
by persuading us to desire and collude with it; and this process is not merely an enormous confidence trick, since we really do have needs and desires which such power, however partially and distortedly, is able to fulfil. Among the various modes of production of any social order is the mode of production of human subjects, or forms of subjectivity; and this mode of production is made up of a whole range of institutions, from church and family to school and culture. The apparatuses of production of forms of subjectivity are just as historically variable as modes of producing economic goods. Literature, in our day, is one such (somewhat subsidiary) apparatus, devoted to the inculcation of certain affective codes and disciplines…”

Capitalism & job insecurity. You can spend a chunk of your life training for a job and the industry suddenly dies / is made obsolete. Or you’re qualified for a viable job but there are invisible barriers to keep it — if you don’t move a certain way, you’re out before you even realize it.

Been thinking for a while now that leftists need better frameworks for thinking about ‘personality.’ It’s such a crucial component of how people interact with each other, but in so many places it’s treated like a non-factor. “There are more important matters.” Yes, & *people* will attend to them.

because if you trust someone, you SHOULD be able to safely disagree with them! that doesn't mean the act of disagreement is guaranteed to feel wonderful for either of you; it means you should trust each other enough to be able to ask questions or gently push back without immediate hostility

this is an extremely generalized example, but the point is this: when we talk derisively about performative leftism, it's easy to characterize it as something born purely from a shallow understanding of the issues or naked hypocrisy, but the social fear and anxiety component is crucial -

and this is where we have to acknowledge the degree to which performativity is so often driven by fear: because while these are valid *emotional* concerns, they are ultimately concerns about being *seen* to do the right thing, as opposed to concerns about actually *doing* the right thing.

you know the type of hyper-judgemental, mean-spirited, profoundly hypocritical bible-basher who thinks that everything *they* do is morally sanctioned by god, whereas anyone who disagrees with them even slightly must be listening to demons? the left also has those; they just use therapyspeak.

though it pains us to admit it, the right does not have a monopoly on narcissists, assholes, manipulators, deflectors, liars, abusers and any/all other categories of toxic personality whose bullshit ought not be allowed to persist unchecked - but the ones on the left speak our language

How art is made informs how we interpret it. A mass printed card is not as personal as a card that is cut, folded and illustrated by hand. An artwork that someone made to fulfill a prompt, no more no less, is not as personal as art that passed through a person’s body. Methods aren’t interchangeable.

I love abstraction, but I don’t think all abstraction is made equal. There are differences between symbolic abstraction, emotive abstraction, and nonsensical abstraction. Nonsensical abstraction risks clouding the mind — bad for one’s hygiene.

The problem is clearly not people moving from one place to another - that's fine and normal - but specifically the power dynamic of privileged white people refusing to become part of a pre-existing community and instead trying to control it, putting marginalized people's lives in danger.

In my experience, what many trauma survivors want, really want, is real, actual conversation. Not the kind of bullsh*t conversations prevalent in our culture, where one person is out to shape the behavior of the other. Connection without coercion. What a concept.

My whole career the Humanities seem to have been curled up in a defensive crouch trying to justify our meaning/existence. At times it has even seemed a productive thought exercise, but I think generally whatever body has demanded the justification is not really open to being persuaded of anything.

one thing liberals love to do is describe moral atrocities as quirky minor personal flaws. someone says "I don't want to vote for a candidate committing genocide abroad and funding the Gestapo at home" and they're like "oh so it's illegal not to be perfect now"

I do think self identifying as queer carries expectations about how you interact with people. There is ostensibly an openness to the strange, the unruly, the unfairly maligned. I worry sometimes about queerness being reduced to an aesthetic.

When there is a singularly dominant class of people in a social setting, other groups form: people who want to rival the dominant group’s power out of vanity, people who want to get in where they can fit in, and people who want to escape the entire scenario.
