We do not live in a world where someone carrying on as a much better person represents the ability to atone and do better and earn a better life - we live in a world where it represents the continued immunity to consequence for perpetrators and constant exposure for victims.

The entire world would have to be different, society would have to be reshaped for the ground up, for the people who are truly repentant about sexual assaults to get different opportunities. But we dont live in that world.

"Oh so you dont think anyone can ever grow and change and stop being a bad person?" I actually do, you know, even for the worst things I've been through. But we do not live in a world where, even when that does happen, we can allow those people to carry on as they were.

a public record = public information. something as important as “is this guy on his college’s disciplinary records as someone who committed sexual assault/violence” = need to know information. if you would want to know if someone is a pedo, you should want to know if they’re a rapist.

people have a right to know if a person they’re supporting (including, especially, financially) is a rapist. people who were in this man’s circle on a work level had the right to know that the man who they considered a colleague is not a safe person.

i have a feeling that seeing your rapist become a praised public figure and video essayist would make someone feel a lot more powerless than him finally facing some consequences/removal from public life, as long as no one drags your private identity back into it.

if you’re upset that the information was released without the victim’s consent please consider continuing to protect her identity instead of bemoaning the information coming to light at all. keep the focus on him being a rapist who faced no serious punishment and became a public figure.

i find it very telling that geller only posted his admission of guilt to bluesky. at time of writing, he has not crossposted to his patreon (which still makes 6.4k/month), nor has he made a video statement on youtube (where he still has over 1 million subscribers).

everyone i've seen talking about "rehabilitation" and "restorative justice" in this case has just been using those terms to obfuscate blatant rape apologia. none of you would be saying all that if he presented as a garden variety frat boy instead of a safe progressive.

and furthermore, how is rhetoric like "it was a mistake", "it was ten years ago", "he apologized" and such any different from how society normally treats sexual abusers? if you wouldn't call the cornell essays rehabilitative, three paragraphs (AFTER he was caught redhanded, even) don't count either.

assuming the victim wants silence by default is just as much a convenient assumption as assuming they want their abuser flogged in the streets. how is seeing him lauded as a great feminist for YEARS any less retraumatizing than him being exposed now?

saying everyone in the world should've just kept quiet about public records is like asking people to collect worms to put back in the already-opened can. if your idea is "everyone should've just", it's a stupid idea.

honestly, i find it very dubious that "never reveal someone else's trauma" seems to conveniently logically lead to "we should allow rapists to maintain influencer status". sorry, but it was already out of the victims hands when the US fucking government stepped in six years ago.

the only reason the jacob geller rape case is public record is because the school newspaper sued the university for its mishandling of sexual misconduct. that is why the document that did him in is public record. do you people really think the school newspaper wronged the victim?

it is like really easy in fact to not be a rapist. if someone seems disoriented or asleep or upset or in a state of shutdown you simply don’t have to insist on forcing yourself upon them. you literally don’t have to do that. many people live entire lives without raping others.

“he owned up to it” if he cared about being a rapist he wouldn’t have gone into a public facing job. society punishes people who shoplift and smoke weed more than he’s been punished. man only admitted he’s a rapist so he could aurafarm so-called accountability points.

it's actually very distressing how many people have been so Poisoned by Online that they think a man is entitled to a highly public career in spaces that would boot his ass out in less than a second if they knew his history

i can't speak for Jane Doe or any of the other victims in the news cycle right now, but before you start calling random survivors online "carceral," "punitive," or "anti-restorative justice" for expressing anger & dismay, get a grip. this is not some hypothetical debate topic for us. it's our lives.

maybe before asking "should a person be punished for a mistake they made when they were young for the rest of their lives?" first consider that a lot of rape survivors deal with the trauma of being raped for the rest of their lives, *and* are socially ostracized for having been raped.

The person who needs to be intentionally restored to the community in the aftermath of intimate violence is the victim of that violence. To do that often requires attacking the perpetrators’ power/access to victims. Asking “but how can we fix their heart?” as a bystander is deeply inappropriate.

The disproportionate concern with “rehabilitating” abusers and rapists (nearly always code for maintaining their position and recovering their social status) is actually part of the problem.

All a man has to say is that he found Jesus or that he knew what he did was wrong and we're all supposed to forgive and give grace instead of considering what the victim wants or needs. I too want ppl to be redeemed but it's just really frustrating how we keep doing the same shit over and over again

And ppl would fall for it b/c the bar for men is in hell and if a man seems like he's taking responsiblity for his actions that's enough for ppl to scold anyone being rightfully angry and hurt about what that man did

Also I'm sorry but ima really need y'all to stop putting men on pedastals for seemingly taking accountability. During the metoo movement when men were getting outed and would release a statement, they would also feign accountability by being self-pitying

He went out of his way to obfuscate this, particularly to his femme colleagues. That isn’t the picture of someone who’s atoned for his actions. That’s someone who knew what they did was wrong and continued with his lucrative career anyway. Not shocking to see people do backflips to defend him.

Leftists love to start morally handwringing as soon as someone they deem “good” is outed. If this was some rightoid freak people would NOT be pushing the rehabilitation angle so hard. Of course rehab is possible but acting as if we know he’s atoned based on video essays is naive and ridiculous.

Seeing how many people are rushing to minimise what Jacob Geller did— saying he shouldn’t be referred to as a rapist and that he’s atoned— is sobering but not surprising. It’s rape culture at its finest. Anyone can be a rapist, even your leftie YouTube man

[jacob geller] he only admitted to it when it became public, i.e. when he got caught. his career, community, and his access to women's spaces depended on pretending he was a safe person. how are you supposed to keep trusting someone who was lying to you from the beginning?

We spend so much time dogmaticly shutting down anything that would empower victims and disempower abusers (because that could mean being violent towards the oppressor, and the liberals said that's VERY bad), that the most radical thing to do about rape turns out to be... Nothing. And I hate that.

We literally have a pedophile in office because of the culture society has cultivated that rescues abusers from accountability and allows them to rise to power to commit more atrocities. Redemption for sexual abusers can't and should not exist until we erase this culture of rape absolution.

Literally, like I believe in redemption and rehabilitation, but until we can actually hold sexual abusers accountable, there IS no redeeming people who commit these crimes, because redemption to these people in their eyes means instant absolution regardless of the severity of the person's actions.

Patriarchal society turned rehabilitation, which is a long, hard, communal, and crucially, VOLUNTARY process, and reframed it as something that automatically happens to abusers 5 minutes after their last rape. So, if you dare hold a grudge about assault, you're actually just bigoted against rapists.

Every time a man gets exposed for sexual abuse, a wave of angry abuse apologists (even some victims) jumps to defending him. Don't you believe people can change?! What do you expect him to do, die?! You're just bloodthirsty! You don't care about the victims (now leave my comfort rapist alone!)

I think comparing Geller no longer having a huge influencer audience with the *death penalty* is insane. He can still go to the store and buy food; he hasn't been exiled to a remote island. His "punishment" is that he might have to live as as a non-Youtuber, which 99.9% of us already managed.
