Check out this work-in-progress piece from @johnpicacio.bsky.social for the hardover variant of the upcoming @locusmag.bsky.social Best SFF of the year anthology. Absolute Fire! I can't wait to see the colors. Graphite.
John PIcacio's composition for the Locus Best SFF of the year anthology. A woman's face looking up and to the right. Her face is lit brightly and her neck is in dark shadow. Where her hair would be, her portrain instead blends into the background giving the impression that her hair is a starfield or that she blends into her environment. The background is a motif of whorls reminiscent of nebulae, frothing liquid, and energy. There are planets, comet-like streaks across the sky, indistinct fantasy-like structures.

I'm excited about this upcoming #SFinTranslation: Ten Chinese SF authors were asked to imagine China 100 years after the Covid-19 pandemic. 10 authors and 8 translators swarming a common concept seems like an interesting case study!

Book friends! I am a freelance proofreader looking for more work. I have done a bunch of work with Tor, but I will happily also do nonfiction. Are you a publisher or self-pub author who needs a proofreader, or know one? Please DM. (Please boost for visibility, if you don't mind)

There are a lot of people writing stories around the world. Not all of them are being placed in front of you. www.sfintranslation.com is a great resource and community and I've been eagerly awaiting the second issue of Small Planet!

I've been working to compile a bibliography of cyberpunk prose translated into English. Clumsily, but I'm learning. ISFDB has been a tremendous resource for this, because of course it has. I do wish the record structure supported translator credits as data. #SFinTranslation

On an (as yet) unsuccessful quest to find a human translation of Ivan Adamovič's article (K)Anály kyberpunku, I stumbled across an English language retrospective of his describing the emergence of SF in Soviet-influenced Prague. "In the Grey Zone of Science Fiction"

I've been curious about non-English/international reactions to the Cyberpunk movement as it was unfolding in the US, so will hopefully post some fun observations as I make them for a time. The first comes from this Czech language magazine ("Ikarie"), November 1991.
The cover of the November 1991 Czech language magazine titled "Ikarie". It is a science fiction magazine, with some content descriptions in Czech on the cover. Examples include the word "Kyberpunk" with no context, and "William Gibson: Johny Mnemonic", which was translated into Czech and printed in this issue.

I got to meet this crew and play their game at Origins (and was also lucky enough to see a great panel with art director @irenekaoru.bsky.social along with her colleagues from R.Talsorian and Neuroscapes). This is worth checking out!

I just became aware of @rachelcordasco.bsky.social's new zine "Small Planet" via @ancillaryreviewofbooks.org. She will be helping connect international works of SF to English language readers. The first issue has plenty of commentary on the meta of translating SF and I'm hyped for more!

Last week I was lucky to attend Origins where I listened to Winter Jaye discuss art direction for @rtalsoriangames.bsky.social Later I watched M.Pondsmith GM a CP Red game for actors from Edgerunners. Yesterday, this appeared on my porch, signed by both. My friends are thoughtful and sneaky!

I appreciated that @thebookloft.bsky.social participated with a booth at Origins this year. I picked up Jared Shurin's "The Big Book of Cyberpunk". His inclusions are KILLER with many translated and otherwise new-to-me works, along with well-informed selections that give me confidence in the rest.

Very tickled by this image of @marthawells.com reading The Murderbot Diaries to a very attentive audience at Texas A&M! (Image via her official site)
Martha Wells sits on a stool in a robotics lab, reading from her novel: The Murderbot Diaries. Surrounding her on the floor and tables are various search-and-rescue robots positioned as if they are attentively listening to her.
