Noting that "cast" is also a crochet-related verb, so it buzzes with a bit of resonance here.

I saved the image because I was curious if the barcode would resolve and, if so, what that might imply about what that model considered quintessentially "barcode". But then I zoomed in and was deflated to realize it was impressionist. Which I guess is still an answer.

Damon Knight would definitely approve. He'd say you were "feeding Fred".

That second to last paragraph implies without outright stating that SFWA guidance led directly to the inclusion of the moral rights waiver. The practice is sometimes a rhetorical device deployed to create room for an incorrect interpretation without committing to a lie. It makes me skeptical.

I found this to be enjoyable, immersive, clever, and something new to me. But the highest praise I want to share (because it is what would have motivated me to buy it if I were on the fence) is that it is an ACTUAL spy story. Not just a fantasy story with a veneer of spy stuff. Pure delight.

Ha, so we COULD judge books by their covers, if only publishers had better taste.

I'm so skeptical, but don't have the experience to contradict! For starters, why in the world would the winemaker and the label maker consistently be the same entity?

For when you want to be heard but have nothing to say?

I may not be as tough as Ellen Ripley, but I seem to have negotiated a peace with at least one face hugger.

@commapress.bsky.social can you recommend a North American vendor for this title?

I saw a parent gloating that they had an LLM podcast about their family activities to play in the daily commute with kids. I really can't imagine outsourcing talking with my daughter about our day to a bot. Bleak.

This is interesting, but does look past the fact that a single script can result in wildly different films. I'd argue that Disney may not have been the correct studio for that script, especially at that time.

I've been trying to work in "taking the stairs" as a metaphor for doing things under our own power because it's frankly good for us to do so. Basically a way to chide my friends when they use it in their personal lives. Don't deny yourself the rep! Do the thing! Be proud of it!

Humble Beginnings:
Front of the first issue of Locus, a back when it was a fan created zine.

Yellowing paper with minor water stains. Minimal layout and graphic design. Appears to be stapled in the top left corner. The letters on the page display weathering and fading. The issue is dated June 27, 1968.

Check out this work-in-progress piece from @johnpicacio.bsky.social for the hardover variant of the upcoming @locusmag.bsky.social Best SFF of the year anthology. Absolute Fire! I can't wait to see the colors. Graphite.
John PIcacio's composition for the Locus Best SFF of the year anthology. A woman's face looking up and to the right. Her face is lit brightly and her neck is in dark shadow. Where her hair would be, her portrain instead blends into the background giving the impression that her hair is a starfield or that she blends into her environment. The background is a motif of whorls reminiscent of nebulae, frothing liquid, and energy. There are planets, comet-like streaks across the sky, indistinct fantasy-like structures.

Momentary loss of control, even for a second, frustrates. I've never played a game and appreciated how environmental rumbling periodically interrupts my control of the character, for example.

That's a strong principle I agree with. But I wonder if it's quite so part-and-parcel. Generative LLMs = Atomic Bomb. Medical imaging = Nuclear power reactor. AI = Atomic Physics. I see clear arguments against the bomb.

There is a lot that alarms and angers and disappoints, and a lot of decisions being made FOR us with regards to what our future will look like. Seems like humans should have more of a voice than we are being afforded generally, and regulatory bodies can't get competition and GDP out of their heads.

That said... Propaganda, artist displacement, economic tumult, consolidation of power, wealth inequality, environmental impact, power consumption, data collection/privacy, defering human agency... these are present and contribute to rising technofascism.

As an unpublished "writer", I barely qualify to have an opinion. But if I were a writer for a living, I'd immediately question philosophical alignment with a publisher who chose to generate a bad image ("Good enough!") to attract authors rather than work with an artist.

Not to mention that 3 of the authors on the fiction long list are non-hispanic white males. They are literally tied for MOST representation with white women vs any other gender/ethnicity pair. What is this guy even on about?

I think at least some of the time people don't know the origin of what they share. There is also a sentiment against data center expansion that is not blanket opposed to AI usage. Idk how common either is, but strongly suspect the first is very common.

The US would be greatly improved by importing more Canadian culture. The cultural purists among us are the least cultured by a wide margin. Type of people who think renaming lakes is substantive foreign policy.
