If you have ever read a book to a baby, you will realize it's not a linear experience. The baby wants to turn pages backward, wants to ask questions (if they're old enough), wants to examine the pages and get really excited if they can say "bear!" even if the word "bear!" is not on the page.

It's book quote Wednesday. Today the word is "push", and we're back with Nik Thorn in his least-favourite and yet somehow also favourite bar. From Nectar for the God. #bookQW books2read.com/NectarGod
Promo image for Nectar for the God by Patrick Samphire, showing the cover of the book and the accompanying text:

I made my way down the steps, pushed the door open, and stumbled into the poorly-lit interior. To say Dumonoc was cheap was like saying that a volcano was warm; it wasn’t wrong, but it didn’t exactly capture the essence of the situation. The interior was almost entirely dark, other than the bar and a couple of flickering candles at shadowed tables, and Dumonoc didn’t provide those. If you wanted light, you brought your own. Most people didn’t bother. Probably so they wouldn’t have to see what was floating in the beer.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'push' and I'd like to push one last Los Nefilim book at you if that's okay. This is my favorite of the quartet. In this scene, Miquel is a captive who has hatched a plan to take out the enemy: awfulagent.com/ebooks/carve... #BookQW #BookSky
A drop of sweat fell from his brow to the page, blotting the ink beneath the churning colors. A teal clef carried an indigo ghost note across the page. The lines twisted together. He tried to separate them. The tremors returned to rattle his hands.

He needed a caesura—the two diagonal slashes that indicated a brief, silent pause—to insert between Carme’s raucous notes.

He hummed until he formed enough blue sound waves to create the caesura. With the pencil, he tried to push the slash marks beneath the teal clef. His hand shook as if palsied. The pencil missed the gap between the clef and the indigo ghost note. On the second try, he caught both lines together and had to let them go. The third attempt brought him success. Peeling back the clef, he found the ghost note’s true image. He sucked his breath between his teeth.

Finally. He’d found the sigil for the bomb.

Art is hard! (As you know, people do this with writing books, too.) I was trying to find forms that I could have fun being bad at, low investment, low expectations. Too much of my day job is stressing over creating stuff. 😂

I said that I wasn’t going to terrorize my dog, who trusted me, just so she could pet her. Boo could sit happily in her kennel for a few minutes while she visited.

Oh, everything out of her mouth is the wildest, most incorrect take. And it was very Dunning Kruger effect. She’d watched a few videos and decided to tell me what to do and I had to remind her that I worked in a vet clinic for three years, grew up fostering animals, and have always had dogs.

My dog didn’t need someone scaring her. She needed softness and support. I work from home so she was able to get what she needs, but I think most people would have had to rehome her. They simply don’t have the resources and that’s okay! She was a lot of work! And very weird! But also, worth it.

She’s a great dog. We just had to spend a lot of time working with her and also knowing her limits. New people freak her out. So we let her stay in her kennel so she feels safe. My SIL told me I needed to “be the alpha” and dominate her because she’d been watching the Dog Whisperer and…no.

Because my mother lives with us & Boo would enthusiastically jump on her, my mom paid to send her to a trainer to live with for a few weeks. I actually regret it. Many trainers like this are great, but in this case I soon figured out that these ones were a bad fit. I had to regain Boo’s trust after

The trainer was great! It just turned out my dog was super stubborn. She knew exactly what we were asking her to do and would choose not to do it or would do it with maximum ridiculousness. We had to be so, so patient and also work with her limits.

This is my dog, Boo. We adopted her a few years ago. She was a year old and we quickly discovered had never been in a house. She had no idea how to dog. She would frequently hide behind me on the couch and was not potty trained. I immediately took her to obedience classes. They went poorly.

I’ve worked in vet clinics, I’ve fostered, and helped at dog shelters and THIS. It’s hard work! Many people aren’t prepared. And some of them should absolutely bring the dog back if they get in over their heads. Even when you have tons of experience, it’s hard.

Campus rape is really widespread; statistics suggest a significant percent of women who go to college will be raped there; feminism opened up a good conversation about it around 2012-13; it's weird when people treated Cornell like an isolated rather than dramatic example of a pervasive problem.
