Working almost downtown means many bus options (and sometimes I bike) but I really miss passing through Alderney landing daily and picking up whatever from O’Bees.

Noted and thanks for the source. I do follow a couple of (very awesome) folks on Substack and a few folks follow me though I’ve never posted. I had a website that I let die 10 years ago because I wasn’t organized enough to keep it dormant.

In both instances, doesn’t the owner of the bungalow reap much of the reward? Assuming property values are not capped, property tax is how the increased value funds public amenities I think - regardless of whether that increase was fast or slow.

It’s ground cherry savouring season. I’m obsessed. Make plans not to miss it next year. That means growing your own but it’s pretty damn easy and a pot on a deck or outdoor table is great because the “harvest” doesn’t get lost as easy.

On my goodness. See the size of this culvert that was overwhelmed (tech language?) by the heavy rain in Cape Breton. It looks like its diameter is approximately the width of a lane of the highway it used to be under. #ClimateChange

Danielle Smith’s Bill 11 opens the door to U.S.-style two-tier health care, letting those who can pay jump the queue while everyone else waits. The Federal Liberal Government has the power to defend public health care and enforce the Canada Health Act. New Democrats are calling on them to act.

I made it to Julius Caesar at Point Pleasant last night. I studied it in high school and but forgot almost everything, including that the rationale for killing Caesar was a belief (maybe not deeply held, maybe not grounded in much evidence) that his ambition would curtail the freedom of Romans.

Nonmarket expansion to 20%, including through acquisition of older stock. The CHRA and CHTC have lots to say about this, as does Ren Thomas at Dalhousie in her new book, Silver Buckshot (as opposed to silver bullet). Agree that current policy is inadequate.

This CAEH report on homelessness has, I think, the right basic diagnosis but whatever your preferred mechanism I think people aren't grappling with the magnitude of the affordability problem at the bottom end of the market. caeh.ca/news/homeles...
According to the CMHC, the average annual income for Canadian renters with the lowest incomes was $19,500 in 2023. A rental price that would be reasonably affordable for those renters would be $487.50 per month: nowhere near the asking rents of new rental housing stock, and substantially lower than asking rents even for the lowest-cost units in the private rental market.

Listening to a CBC interview about the changes in immigration rules and I wholeheartedly agree. In speaking with colleagues concerned about work permits not being renewed, it’s changed so drastically it actually punishes people who followed the old rules and advice.
