Today I've been reading articles about the future of Information/information systems dated from 1945 to 1980. The problems: already too much to read and scientific outputs rapidly expanding. No suggestion ppl publish less. Focus is building better tools for search, discovery, synthesis, etc.

Ohhhhh, yeah, this is exactly why I can find them useful at work but not at home; my work life starts every day with identifying a collection of tasks I will be doing (at which point it becomes possible to label some of them as AI-doable or not). but identifying those tasks is itself a task

In practice, AI literacy doesn’t start with building the tool for your personal use. It starts with understanding yourself as a collection of tasks who should subcontract those out to a machine. Almost no regular person’s life currently exists as such.

They do. But they also say authors should submit their own work, declare funding and COIs, etc. So, you know. 🤷🏼‍♀️ As long as we look to journals to catch bad behavior rather than the field to deal with it (shame, censure, expulsion, etc), well, 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Is a journal that intends to charge an APC but doesn't for x years to get established really a diamond journal? www.nature.com/articles/d41...

A study tracking diamond open-access journals has found an increase in titles switching to other publishing models — especially over the past few years.

When I was in library school, the theory of unknown/undiscovered public knowledge was the rage. There was some evidence to validate it but it took a lot of effort. Wonder if the theorist is alive to see this ...

Sub your scholarly topic for Ted's, and the observation stays the same. GenAI models are the new mass media, whether we like or not. You cannot "should" people out of using them. You might be able to convince them to go beyond. But the first question is if experts w know what non-experts are told.

I don't disagree with all of this but I'm not convinced that in the pre-AI world "a paper stands or falls on procedure, not on whose lab it came from" is correct. Academic knowledge production has always been about fairly bad indicators of prestige and reputation. giorgio.gilest.ro/the-weimar-o...

Suggestions as a consumer of this literature, if not a producer of it. 1. Always first, understand the history. Higher ed helped power the US economically and socially in the mid to late 20th c. Higher ed collaborated with industry and govt it fueled incredible research esp./ not only In STEM. 5/

We don’t talk enough about how much of our days have become entangled in determining what’s real. What’s genuine. What’s human or what’s synthetic. What’s worth our time after having already spent it. It’s a grotesque skill we’ve all been forced to master, and a waste of energy none of us can spare.
