Turned my explorations of word mentions in popular country songs into a mini collection.🐴🤠🎵 Had a lot of fun playing with circular shapes and earthy colour tones of country albums. Data from #TidyTuesday, made in python matplotlib + Figma. Detailed versions 👇 #Dataviz
Collage of four squared images. Each of them showing a circular shape that visualises word mentions in country song lyrics. Exploring patterns for 'girl', 'baby', 'love' and 'town'.

Exploring country songs featured in the Billboard Top 30 (2013-2019). If you played all 484 songs at once, most of the time you'd hear someone sing 'girl'. Data via #TidyTuesday. Prototype in python, final version in Figma - code here: github.com/Lisa-Ho/smal... #Dataviz
Visualisation exploring mentions of 'girl' in top country songs in 2013-2019. A spiral of individual markers where each marker depicts a single word in a song. The colour of each marker represents how many songs mention 'girl' at that exact location in the song.

The rise of larger vehicles like SUVs and pickup trucks, with their taller hoods and larger blind zones, has contributed to a 75% increase in pedestrian and cyclist deaths since 2009. Until we design better streets and ban these vehicles, people outside these vehicles will keep dying.

Accessing cash is getting harder. The number of ATMs has declined substantially in almost all Local Authorities in England in the past five years. Across the UK ATM numbers have fallen continuously since 2015. 💷 📉 One last #Dataviz for #30DayChartChallenge Day 11 | Physical. Made in Svelte + D3
Horizontal beeswarm plot showing percentage change in ATM counts by local authority from June 2021 to Jan 2026, with regions listed vertically (London to Yorkshire & H). Each dot marks a local authority’s percent change on a −50% to 0% axis; dot colour encodes ATMs per 1,000 people from yellow (0.1) to blue‑green (>1.2). Most dots cluster around −30% to −20%. Main takeaway: ATM access has declined across all regions, with most local authorities losing about 20–30% of machines, reducing cash availability.

Lavender is the busiest plant, with knapweeds and ragwort also attracting high traffic, while buttercup and hogweed receive the fewest visits. ABSTRACT

Spreadsheets are widely used software tools for data entry, storage, analysis, and visualization. Focusing on the data entry and storage aspects, this article offers practical recommendations for organizing spreadsheet data to reduce errors and ease later analyses. The basic principles are: be consistent, write dates like YYYY-MM-DD, do not leave any cells empty, put just one thing in a cell, organize the data as a single rectangle (with subjects as rows and variables as columns, and with a single header row), create a data dictionary, do not include calculations in the raw data files, do not use font color or highlighting as data, choose good names for things, make backups, use data validation to avoid data entry errors, and save the data in plain text files.

Give me 20! So many things resonated with Evelina's 20 Learnings from a 10 years+ data storytelling journey. 📊 As the first #dataviz specialist in a think tank, my current top 3 relate to advocating for best practice, being a teacher and compromise. What are yours? www.theplot.media/p/give-me-20
#6 It's your job to advocate for best practices. Whether you have external or internal clients, you’ll sometimes need to explain the research and push back on what the stakeholders are asking—even if you end up going with their request. #8 You’re a teacher half of the time. Whatever your focus within the field, pedagogy and onboarding will take a big chunk of your time (and patience). #13 Compromise is your second name. The most beautiful or creative solution might not be the best one for the stakeholders; you’ll often need to swallow your pride and go with the group’s consensus.

As we’re heading into winter, we look back at pressures facing the NHS last winter. We found longer waiting times in A&E (only 73% treated within 4 hours) and worse ambulance handover delays (32% taking longer than 30min vs 28-29% in previous winters). More here www.health.org.uk/reports-and-...
Ambulance handover delays remained high in winter 2024/25.
An area chart shows weekly delays for handovers to A&E during winters from 2017/18 to 2024/25. In 2024/25, around 20% of handovers took 30–60 minutes, and about 10% lasted 60 minutes or more. These levels are similar to the last two winters, but much higher than levels in 2018/19.
