To counter AI, an illustrator in Balbriggan offers to draw posters for barter. Lauren Fernandes noticed menus and flyers all over with the same sterile look, and thought: what if she could help out small businesses which can't afford creative work, usually?

This is written to fly under the radar, from today’s Sunday Independent (Ireland). The press council upheld a complaint about an offensive and transphobic opinion column by Brenda Power. Sindo was required to publish the decision. @mams4transrights.bsky.social @jesalady.bsky.social
A half page article from the Sunday independent with the headline OMB2590 A woman and the Sunday independent.
The article outlines the complaint, the appeal and the decision.
The complaint relates to an opinion column deploring the fact that an unnamed td provided a character reference for a man convicted of sexual violence against children. A sentence in the column argued that this case threw light on the possibility that a man would “identify as a woman” in order to commit sexual violence.
The press council concluded that “a reference to a protected group [trans people] in this context should have been extremely carefully scrutinised”. It found that the Sunday independent was in violation of principle 8 of the press council code of practice.

Our patron saint was super-mystic Teresa of Avila, so we’d much talk of the crystal castle within us and its rooms and being pierced by the arrow of God’s love. Heady stuff!

Post V2/McQuaid there was such a mix…we’d bring back the Latin mass, happy clappy, liberation theology & some charismatic movement types…syncretic superstition always close. Awful when a ‘god loves you regardless’ one morphed back to ‘every time a girl whistles Our Lady cries & Satan is happy’ type

One mad one where we’d to imagine being safe, warm, nourished in a dark watery place - turned out we were a foetus whose mother was about to make a v. bad decision. Akin to Redemptorist sermons where sinners would be brought to the edge of the fiery abyss and then shown the path to salvation.

We’d loads of meditation. Some cool 19C stuff such as identifying w Christ’s suffering (I imagined being crucified too hard & fainted) but mainly tepid Vatican 2 meadows & daisies & god loves you w occasional scaldy anti-abortion imagery thrown in at the end once the doors of perception were open.

We’d many visits f people who’d had visions (Medugorje etc) & a Nicaraguan Sandinista. My boyfriend had a ‘sex ed’ retreat w Fr Mchl Cleary (of secret family w his housekeeper fame) & when someone asked re masturbation he sang a song about how little boys should keep their peckers in their pockets

Local authorities too. Graphic designers/illustrators are not formally supported nor appreciated enough and it should be feasible for representative bodies (IDI/DCCI) to lobby the Arts Council/state/LAs/other public agencies to develop policy - eg in relation to any orgs/projects they fund.

Seeing publicly/state funded organisations use AI is woeful - has or could there be any representation made by/to D/Culture or Arts Council or Institute of Designers or Crafts and Design Council? An Post (who seem proud of their stamp design commissions) have produced some egregious rubbish recently
