We’ve had Giant Dog for 3 years, and apparently are still capable of the rookie mistake of leaving food on the counter within her reach, and she is still capable of forgetting her manners when pizza is involved. Fortunately it was just one and a half slices, hopefully she doesn’t get an upset tummy.

Considering the sort of things I do in my spare time (sometimes involving animal costumes), you wouldn’t think I’m a person who lacks whimsy, but I have never given a car I’ve owned a name. I tried calling my 1998 Dodge Neon “Mr. Car” at one point, but it didn’t stick.

Since electric cars are quiet, it has a speaker that makes a sound at low speeds reminiscent of tinnitus for safety. If this is configurable, I’d like to change it to: • the sound the Jetsons’ car makes • “Turkey in the Straw” ice cream truck version • some guy making car sounds with his mouth.

It is a little weird driving something manufactured so recently. All the screens makes it feel like I’m driving a tablet or laptop, two pieces of technology that aren’t renowned for aging gracefully over the period of time one hopes to keep a car. Guess we’ll see!

Range is nominally in the mid 200s, which is plenty for my commute and errands, but not the most convenient for road trips, particularly to places like the upper peninsula where fast chargers are still sparse.

Complaints? The visibility out the back isn’t great, but it has a backup camera and little icons of a car next to SpongeBob’s pal Patrick Star on the side mirrors that light up when someone is in your blind spot. Mixed feelings about all the driver assist stuff.

I’ve had it about a month now, and I’m pretty happy with it. I haven’t installed a level 2 charger but I seem to be getting by alright on regular wall current. This may change in the winter when the range goes down, but we’ll deal with that when we need to.

It’s my first electric car, a decision made easier by my 240+ mile weekly commute, and the effect the current geopolitical situation has had on gas prices. So um… critical support for Comrade Trump for encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles, I guess.

So a thing that happened: Last month the transmission in my 2006 Hyundai decided to stop being a transmission. Some quick and brutal math was done regarding the cost of fixing the transmission on a 20yr old/150+k mile car, and I ended up replacing it with a 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV.

This morning a YT video about the history of the Illinois Tollway oases showed up in my recommendations, and I’m always up for stuff about transportation infrastructure. Then this came up a couple of minutes in and I was out. If you can’t find a photo of what you want, just describe it, dude.

So the point of the road trip was to see how Giant Dog deals with road trips, since when she’s boarded she gets sad and refuses to eat. The answer is: largely okay. She rested on her bed in the back of the car during the drive and didn’t freak out when we left her alone in the hotel room for a bit.

There was a time in my life when I could have happily decorated my home entirely with stuff from the Paul Bunyan Cook Shanty gift shop. I’m not saying I’m still in that phase, but I’m not not saying that either.

For reasons that made sense when I came up with the idea, the Kid, Giant Dog, and I are in Wisconsin Dells on a Friday night. The restaurant has outdoor seating and is dog friendly, but it has live music, lots of drunk people and a million revving Harleys, so Ms. Dog would like to leave now please.

At the dog park this morning Giant Dog went up to greet another dog’s human who was sitting on a bench. I was just starting to apologize for the long strands of drool she was introducing to his lap, when his dog burst out of the pond and flopped his wet body against my legs. Anyway, dogs are cool.
