Back in high school a friend described a nightmare he had where dinosaur bones rose from the earth, cracked open, and released a plague of painful burrs that eventually covered *everything* and decades later I still think about this whenever I get burrs on me and it wasn’t even my dream.

I’m not saying sports mascots have to be native to the team’s area or anything. There are no bears in Chicago or royals in Kansas City and that’s fine. But flamingos are so Florida coded that I keep thinking “What are you doing in Wheaton?”

I always get nervous around MRI machines for some reason.
A large wooden door festooned with warning signs, including a large red octagon on the floor in front of it and another on the door itself reading “DANGER DANGER
HIGH MAGNETIC FIELD STOP IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING METAL ON YOUR PERSON

CELL PHONES”
There is also a dense multilanguage sign listing hazards that is primarily in German, probably because the machine behind the door is manufactured by Siemens, but which somehow serves to make the effect more menacing, like you’re going to end up with Helvetica Syndrome, when really all it’s going to do is turn your keys into impromptu bullets.

I’ll often remember something from my youth and think “That wasn’t real, was it?” The arcade had an All Points Bulletin cabinet (Atari, 1987). It was a third person police car sim, and between rounds you would try to beat confessions out of suspects before your boss entered the room.

Whenever I see the painting Circe Invidiosa I picture Circe slowly and carefully picking her way down to the shore, trying not to slosh whatever nasty stuff she has in that wide shallow bowl all over the place.
