🔗 Gandhi's Wheels: 🕊️ Gandhi was born on 2 October 1869. 📺 Baird's TV breakthrough came exactly 56 years later. What connects them? Three wheels, Indian independence and an Oscar-winning film! www.linksalads.com/2026/10/02/g... #LinkSalads #Linkology #Gandhi #otd
A wide, richly detailed historical illustration in warm sepia, saffron and green tones, celebrating Mahatma Gandhi and Indian independence.

On the left, a large vintage wooden television with a rounded screen, control knobs and speaker grille displays a black-and-white portrait of Gandhi. He is bald, wearing his distinctive round spectacles and simple white clothing.

Around the television, an enthusiastic crowd of Indian men, women and children celebrates independence. People smile, clap, raise their arms and wave Indian tricolour flags. Orange, white and green bunting hangs above the gathering.

In the background, historic Indian architecture resembling Delhi's Red Fort rises beneath a warm, hazy sky. The 24-spoked Ashoka Chakra is visible on the national flags.

The image symbolically connects Gandhi's birth on 2 October 1869 with John Logie Baird's television breakthrough on 2 October 1925.

The accompanying article, Gandhi's Wheels, explores three wheels: Gandhi's charkha, Baird's rotating television scanning disc and the Ashoka Chakra on India's national flag.

This is an imaginative historical illustration, not a representation of an actual television broadcast from 1947.

✈️ 1924: first aerial circumnavigation. 🌌 1980: Carl Sagan’s Cosmos begins. 🖖 1987: Star Trek: The Next Generation launches. One date. Three journeys. From travelling around Earth to imagining a voyage across the universe. #LinkSalad #Linkology #Cosmos #StarTrek www.linksalads.com/2026/09/28/a...
A wide, cinematic illustration representing three anniversaries connected with 28 September. On the left, a single vintage 1920s floatplane flies above a large view of Earth, representing the completion of the first aerial circumnavigation in 1924. Warm sunlight, clouds and the blue curve of the planet give way to deep space.

At the centre is Carl Sagan, shown in a thoughtful pose with his chin resting on his hand and looking upwards. He is surrounded by stars, colourful nebulae and spiral galaxies, representing the television premiere of Cosmos: A Personal Voyage in 1980 and humanity’s attempt to understand its place in the universe.

On the right, a futuristic starship inspired by the USS Enterprise-D flies forwards through a dense starfield, representing the premiere of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987. Blue engine trails extend behind the spacecraft as it travels deeper into space.

The image moves from warm earthly colours on the left to cooler blues and purples on the right, visually tracing the Link Salad’s progression: ✈️ around the world → 🌍 Earth → 🌌 the cosmos → 🖖 the final frontier

Invading Martians to Middle-earth to Misery 📚 21 Sept: 👽 1866 — H. G. Wells born 🧙 1937 — The Hobbit published 👑 1947 — Stephen King born Three literary worlds, one date — which ironically is also International Day of Peace. 🕊️ #LinkSalads #Books #Films www.linksalads.com/2026/09/21/m...
Martians to Middle-earth to Misery 📚👽

There’s quite a literary collection attached to 21 September.

👽 1866 — H. G. Wells was born. His The War of the Worlds gave us the Martian fighting machines striding across England and helped establish him as one of the fathers of modern science fiction.

🧙 1937 — The Hobbit was published in Britain, introducing readers to Bilbo Baggins and the world of Middle-earth.

👑 1947 — exactly ten years later, Stephen King was born. From Carrie and The Shining to Misery, It and The Shawshank Redemption, he became one of the defining writers of modern horror and suspense.

So on one date we can travel from Wells’s Martians → Tolkien’s Middle-earth → King’s Misery.

And there’s one more rather wonderful collision: 21 September is the International Day of Peace. 🕊️

Hence our peaceful Stephen King sits outside a hobbit hole, typing away with his International Day of Peace mug, while H. G. Wells’s Martian tripods advance ominously across the countryside behind him.

Three literary landmarks. Three very different imaginary worlds. One date.

Malmö Turning On 3 September 1967, Sweden turned right, swapping sides of the road. It’s also Skyscraper Day, marking Louis Sullivan’s birthday. So where better to meet than Malmö’s Turning Torso — Santiago Calatrava’s iconic skyscraper twisting through 90°? 🔗🇸🇪🏙️ www.linksalads.com/2026/09/03/m...
A night view of Malmö with Santiago Calatrava’s Turning Torso rising above the waterfront. A road spirals towards the twisting skyscraper while long-exposure trails of white headlights and red tail lights cross one another, symbolising Sweden’s switch from left- to right-hand traffic on 3 September 1967. The Turning Torso provides the link to Skyscraper Day, also on 3 September, marking the birthday of pioneering skyscraper architect Louis Sullivan.

BREAKING! Infantino says the FIFA Forward plan, which would have been the private equity takeover of the World Cup, will not go forward after UEFA, CONCACAF and others opposed it.
The FIFA Forward Enterprise project was intended to provide a basis for further strengthening our FIFA Member Associations and our sport worldwide, especially in those countries where support is most needed. And more so, as we said from the outset, to do this only if a majority of the FIFA Member Associations were in support and always subject to a consultation process with them, the FIFA Council, the Confederations and wider stakeholders.

Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place.

Our purpose has always been - and will always be - to unite and improve.

As a result, this proposal will not proceed.

Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support.

Today’s golfing Link Salad contrasts World Water Day with the first Masters in 1934 — a lush Hanging Gardens-style oasis set against desert scarcity. ⛳🌊 www.linksalads.com/2026/03/22/w... #WorldWaterDay #Golf #WaterScarcity #WorldWaterDay #TheMasters #Golf #WaterScarcity #Sustainability #LinkSalad
Today’s golfing Link Salad image plays on a deliberate contrast. World Water Day exists to highlight the global challenge of water scarcity, yet 22 March 1934 was also the day the first Masters began at Augusta National. That gives us a set of golfing links in every sense: connections between ideas, and a sport built around some of the world’s most carefully maintained green landscapes.

The image pushes that tension further by reimagining the course as a lush Hanging Gardens of Babylon oasis surrounded by desert. It is beautiful, but it also raises an uncomfortable question about the water needed to sustain such spaces, especially in hot and arid climates. In that sense, the image is not just about golf. It is about abundance, scarcity and what green landscapes can hide.

A dramatic night scene in the Arizona desert near Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff shows a long-eared dog leaping into the air as if trying to catch two glowing planets in the sky. Uranus appears large and turquoise-blue while Pluto is smaller and pale, floating close beside it. Behind the dog stands the illuminated white dome of Lowell Observatory, surrounded by red desert rocks and saguaro cacti, with distant canyon cliffs suggesting the nearby Grand Canyon. In the deep indigo sky above, the stars form a constellation shaped like a dog bone, linking the playful scene to the astronomical discoveries associated with the observatory.

Today’s Link Salad connects three anniversaries on 11 March:

📚 Douglas Adams — creator of the Vogons
📰 Rupert Murdoch — builder of the Sun newspaper empire
🌍 1985 — the day Mikhail Gorbachev took power in the USSR

Put them together and you get a surreal office scene: Vogons rubber-stamping paperwork in Wernham Hogg, while David Brent dances and Tim Canterbury looks straight at the camera.

The bridge between these worlds?
Martin Freeman, who appears in both The Office and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Sometimes history, media and science fiction connect in the most unlikely places.
