The first thing people say to me when I tell them about the existence of Flock is, "But don't we want to catch people speeding?" Then I have to explain that these aren't traffic cameras and they aren't used to catch speeders. This is a better explanation of the difference than I've ever managed.
These things are automated license plate readers, or ALPRs, a technology that works quite differently from traffic cameras (which only take photos of vehicles that commit moving violations) or CCTV security cameras (which don’t generate searchable data)—ALPRs indiscriminately record every vehicle that passes them and use AI to create a database of their movements over time. In other words, if traffic camera data tells us “a Honda ran this red light,” an ALPR says “oh, that Honda? I know her. She lives in Carlyle but her boyfriend lives in Van Dorn, she stays at his place every Friday. Also he’s cheating on her.”

New AI gore: Pictures of plates of pretzels. I didn't realize pretzels were a moebius strip/gordion knot of dough with salt on it.
An AI generated "drawing" of pretzels, but the pretzels themselves are all odd shapes and strangely connected to each other. An AI generated "photo" of pretzels in a bowl, but all of the pretzels are basically connected to each other more like a maze or really long line of spaghetti than individual food items.

Probably my favorite project in middle school was just a math assignment that was "pretend you don't have a college degree, go through the classifieds, find a job and housing, and make a budget." I was working minimum wage from a trailer and splurging at dollar tree once a year.

Type out the code

Back in the day I read one of Zed Shaw's "Learn X the hard way" courses (I think it was his C++ course) and he began the course with a disclaimer that said something like "do not copy and paste the examples; type them out" because he believed strongly that doing so improved your comprehension of the material.

These days he recommends something even stronger:

> The best way to do this is when you complete an exercise delete what you did and do it again, but try to use your memory. If you get stuck then look at the exercise for clues, but try your best to recreate what you just did from memory. At first you'll be constantly referring to the exercise and the code, but eventually you'll get to where you can do it on your own. This will also improve your ability to remember more code, your ability to summarize how something works, and generally improve your skills faster than if you did it once and moved on.

This is known as the generation effect in cognitive psychology: the active generation of new content improves comprehension compared to passive consumption of the same material. Or as Richard Feynman put it: "What I cannot create, I do not understand".

I'm not a researcher, but I would still like to add my own spin as a lay programmer on why I believe this phenomenon matters for improving programming ability, even in the age of agentic coding. In fact, I think it's even more important now than ever for people to reacquaint themselves with this "ancient wisdom" because otherwise we'll end up with an entire generation of programmers wondering how anyone ever programmed without the help of a coding agent.

In this post I will lay out the case for why you should do the drudgery of occasionally typing out the code, character-by-character, as best as possible from memory. That doesn't mean that you should never use developer tools of any sort to accelerate the coding process, but you also need to occasionally do the boring parts by hand and by memory

Sometimes, accepting that someone is incorrect is overridden with a desire to make things better in the world. At least, that's usually how it feels when I'm trying to explain something to my 10yo, but they dig in their heels and don't want to hear it.

More context on this #Artemis II image: * This is the night side, lit by moonlight. You can see city lights in Spain & Portugal, & a sliver of day at lower right * The Sun is entirely behind Earth, which makes it a kind of solar eclipse, but w/ Earth doing the eclipsing instead of the Moon: ☀️🌍🚀🌕
A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)
