A graphic showing the cover of LOKI: A Bad God's Guide to Cauasing Chaos. It's yellow and, if you squint, shows Freyja, who we first met in the Loki World Book Day Book, Tales of a Bad God. We also see a very angry horned Hyrrokkin, a cat fighting a dog, and some random ocean creatures. Oh and Loki as a bat. I can't remember if he turns into a bat in the book I think i just thought it looked cool. Maybe I should add him as a bat, there's still time...

Children's books are not a luxury. Libraries & librarians are not a luxury. The teachers who work so hard to inspire kids to read are not a luxury. If you cut or undermine or lose these things – #literacy will cease to be a basic human right, and will become a luxury, available only to a few.

A page from BROKEN PLACES AND OUTER SPACES (TED Books, 2019) and the inner cover of DEATH OF THE AUTHOR (HarperCollins, Jan 14, 2025). 🤖 This novel (DEATH OF THE AUTHOR) has been a long time coming.
Chapter 8
Rusting Robot

I remember how I used to be.
On the tennis court, there were days when I could see through time. It happened most often when things got really heated. Something inside me would align. The tennis term for this heightened state of being is "treeing." It is when you are playing out of your mind, when you can do no wrong, when you can make the universe yield to your every whim. I know it sounds intense, because it is. When I treed, sometimes I could predict the future. Not that far, about one second. I'd know exactly where my opponent was going to hit the ball because I'd see it happen right before it did. It was just enough time to make use of the knowledge.
Even before I began to write science fiction, though I didn't know it, I was sci-fi.
In those moments, my athleticism really was a superpower.
Now, when I write about characters with abilities, the gift of flight, time travel, shape-shifting, I draw from my own experiences as an incredible athlete. And for these characters' conflicts and limitations within the narrative, I draw from my experiences with and recovering from paralysis.Rusted Robots (the second cover of DEATH OF THE AUTHOR)

Have I had my mind changed on social media? Yes - NOT by arguing with randoms, but by following experts and first hand folks who share what they do, what they think and what's going on. The change isn't binary - I used to think one thing, and suddenly now another - it's slow and additive: Learning.
