Geiko Kotoha from Gionkobu. Kyoto, Japan. Photography by onihide on Flickr

Captured by photographer onihide, this serene portrait features Geiko Kotoha of Kyoto’s renowned Gion Kobu district seated gracefully indoors before a traditional shōji screen window. She wears a formal black kuro-tomesode (or trailing hikizuri) kimono, its upper body elegant and unadorned, allowing focus to fall upon her poised composure and the rich hem artwork. Sweeping across her lower skirt and pooled hem is a dynamic, hand-painted motif depicting a fierce tiger amid bamboo foliage (toratake). The trailing hem reveals a soft ivory inner lining accented by a vivid magenta edge, while a gold brocade obi tied at her waist adds a shimmering, structured anchor. Her face is transformed with classic oshiroi makeup, framed by the traditional katsura wig styled in the formal geiko fashion with tortoise-shell kanzashi combs. Behind her, soft daylight filters through grid wooden screens, illuminating the subtle greenery of an inner courtyard garden (tsuboniwa).
Gion Kobu is the largest and most famous of Kyoto’s five hanamachi (flower towns), tracing its history back several centuries to the development of teahouses around Yasaka Shrine. A geiko (the Kyoto term for geisha) represents a fully accredited artist who has completed years of apprenticeship as a maiko, mastering traditional arts including classical dance (Nihon-buyō), shamisen, tea ceremony, and poetic conversation.

The tiger and bamboo (take ni tora) motif painted on her trailing kimono carries deep symbolic roots in East Asian art. Representing power, resilience, and protection, the pairing contrasts the fierce strength of the tiger with the flexible, unbreakable nature of bamboo. The creation of such a formal trailing garment exemplifies peak monozukuri (master craftsmanship in textile design), utilizing traditional yūgen-style freehand dye techniques (yūzen-zome) and hand-applied gold leaf or embroidery

Pretty clear that Trump/Hegseth are doing everything they can to force Ukraine to surrender to Putin by withholding all US assistance while actively helping fund the Russian war machine to kill as many civilians as possible including kids. What a dark, evil chapter in US history.

Look at the shabby state and increasingly authoritarian trajectory of the country and ask yourself if we can endure 2 more years of a lawless Trump administration wreaking havoc with no check from Congress, then vote accordingly. This is not the time for a protest vote or purity politics.

The media is complicit in helping Trump build his cult. They continue to broadcast his remarks, allowing him to reach a bigger audience than Jim Jones ever dreamed of. They ask him questions they know will be answered with a lie. Then they broadcast the LIE over and over again, as if it were truth.
