no one should ever be allowed to "close" an #adoption and legally anonymize a person from their family. we need to imagine long-term custodial care without the pernicious idea of erasing and rewriting a child's identity to suit other people's dreams of family building.

If birthright citizenship is overturned in the US, would it affect adoptees? International ones, yes. Domestic? Our birth certificates are fake. They don't have the names of our birth parents and sometimes our birth dates and birth places have been changed too. So yeah, it could impact us. 🥚

There isn't some institutional violence IN adoption. Adoption IS institutional violence. Adoption IS Trauma. The problem runs all the way to the core of the adoption a.k.a. the legal human trafficking industry. The system was founded on racism and classism.

So am I.. I wholeheartedly second this: Trans adoptees don't get solidarity within the Trans community. & Queer adoptees do not get the support & solidarity from the LGBTQ+ community on issues important to the adoptee community. 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 This issue runs deep.

the relation of parent to child is one of stewardship, not ownership. but #adoption is designed to confer legal parenthood through the issuing of false birth records, which give the adopters permanent ownership of the adoptee's identity. why can't adult adoptees legally emancipate themselves?

I’m sorry, but positionality really does matter. in just the same way, i will never know what it’s like to survive the kinds of displacements experienced by transracial adoptees and intercountry adoptees. it’s never a bad idea to lead with profound epistemic modesty.
