Our statement in response to the Supreme Court ruling in Mahmoud v Taylor. Image thread with alt text. 1/4
Today's Supreme Court decision, though couched in the language of freedom and inclusivity, is a tragic failure for both the right to read and the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. Authors Against Book Bans stands firmly and fiercely against the decision and its rationale. To allow parents to "object" to the presence of positive books about the lives and rights of LGBTQIA+ people is to allow them to "object" to the existence of LGBTQIA+ students, parents, educators, and others in the wider community. You cannot “opt out” of reality, no matter what today’s majority opinion states. These books belong on shelves and these stories belong in classrooms and curricula.

This might be a long shot, but does anyone have recs for nonfiction about the history of high school debate in the United States? Specifically in the late 1940s and early/mid 1950s? Ideally focused on the Midwest and public school programs, but I'd also be happy with a few chapters of a larger book!

cover of a zine titled Do you make books? Yes? I want YOU to join Authors Against Book Bans! By Maia KobabeWHAT IS AUTHORS AGAINST BOOK BANS?

A coalition of writers, illustrators, editors & other book creators, standing united against the unconstitutional movement to limit the freedom to read. We support the availability of diverse voices in our libraries, in our schools, & in our culture. We pledge to band together against the oppression of literature, to speak when our voices are silenced, to go where our bodies are needed, & to fight to ensure this freedom.

Our concern is not only for the books, but for the children, families, educators, librarians, & communities who suffer when the freedom to read is challenged and taken away.

WHAT CAN AUTHORS AGAINST BOOK BANS OFFER YOU?

- Regional groups working on legislation to protect authors & the freedom to read state-by-state

- Online trainings on digital security, public speaking, & how to counter book challenges in your community

-Affinity groups for BIPOC authors, queer authors, authors with disabilities, indie, nonfiction, romance writers & more

-Support if your book is challenged or your school visit is canceled!

-A very active discord communityAuthor: What if my book hasn’t been challenged?

Maia: JOIN!

Author: Ok, but what if I’m really busy and can’t do much organizing right now?

Maia: JOIN ANYWAY!

Even if all you do is sign up, your membership will help lend weight to the letters AABB sends to publishers & legislators. As of January 2025, AABB has 3500+ members. Check out the recent open letter to publishers on AABB’s socials & feel free to share it with your contacts.

An Open Letter to Our Publishers- instagram.com/p/DCzYmKcR8uqMaia: I’ve been facing intense challenges to my book since 2021. Knowing that I am not alone in the fight against censorship is what keeps my spirits up!

Watching the folks in AABB share information, co-write legislation, show up to library & school board meetings, & speak up to publishers about the need to protect diverse books & minority authors has been amazing!

This is a weird & scary time to be an author, but you are not alone! Join thousands of us fighting for the freedom to read, the freedom to write, the freedom to teach, the freedom to learn, & the freedom to share our stories!

Happy International Disability Day (Also known as International Day of Persons with Disabilities/IDPWD)! I'm reusing this graphic from a couple years back because 1) lack of spoons and 2) it is the #1 disability-related quote that people have highlighted in their e-copies of ONE FOR ALL and shared..
A green background with a deep magenta overlay and gold filigree. It reads Happy International Disability Day! Underneath is One for All in a sharp silver font, followed by an illustration of Tania (girl with brown hair and eyes, wearing a pink ballgown and holding a sword) and the quote: "Whatever this dizziness is... maybe it's never been the real problem. It's horrible... but it's not the thing that tears me apart. The problem, the real problem, is the people who decide I'm unworthy because of it."

Just want to remind people that not all disabilities are visual. Thank you @lillielainoff.bsky.social for this amazing graphic. Lillie Lainoff is author of a gender-bending retelling of The Three Musketeers featuring a character with an invisibile disability that threatens her ability to succeed.

Here's your daily reminder that bookstores keep the love of reading alive — but they also keep neighborhoods beautiful. They are places to gather, to celebrate stories, to find community. Please do your holiday shopping at your local independent bookstore, if you are lucky enough to still have one.
