I dislike sweeping statements about what kind of writing has or doesn’t have real artistic merit. I once read an amazing short story written in future tense with a 2nd-person POV. “Trashy” romance can be deeply insightful about life in specific times and places. YA helped me survive as a queer teen.

Worldbuilding facts from the Synchronists series. SYNCHRONISTS is queer sci fi about interconnection and relationships. Available directly from me or wherever you buy books.

Gold text: 1. The universe contains hundreds of worlds. I wanted it to be large enough that I could tell any story I wanted. I regret this when I'm trying to remember how to get from Planet A to Station Z.

Pathetic fallacy
A phrase, too often used condescendingly, to describe a passage of writing in which the landscape, weather, and other things mirror or embody human emotions.

I opened my eyes to Neith standing over me. The hands holding her spear shook, and she glared down at me, grey eyes burning. Her hair was wild with the ravages of the storm outside, which had cast the golden glow of the late afternoon clouds in blood-tinged relief.

Fire blazed and great plumes of smoke rose into the air above the island of Erapetra. The horizon echoed the ruin, clouds red and glowering in the light of the setting sun.

The crew of the Paxos cheered all of a sudden. For a moment, Kallista wanted to think they were cheering the two of them on, encouraging them to break past the rules she’d established. But when she looked out, she saw it was for the nereids, triumphant; and for their narrow escape between the other ships; and for Daphne’s powers drawing the next bolt of lightning onto the third heretofore untouched ship. Soon behind them, the three warships rescued their fleeing sailors from the waves, and battled the fires in their masts, each of them unable to pursue further for the time being.
The Paxos sailed full speed ahead to the wedge of blue sky breaking through the storm clouds.
