#PalacesAndGardens theme of #LastWords "And then there are the final resting spots that resemble a tiny palace. Elias K. Wiley (who died on the Oregon Trail on June 10, 1852). I do wonder why three locks are needed. Answer in alt text." -mick #MickPic #MementoMori #MountCalvaryCemetery
The image shows the Elias K. Wiley stone mausoleum located at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Portland, Oregon
Elias K. Wiley (who died on the Oregon Trail on June 10, 1852).
Choosing an above-ground mausoleum instead of a traditional underground grave involves distinct differences in daily maintenance, environment, committal services, and costs.

Environment and Protection

• Clean and Dry: Crypts keep caskets isolated from direct contact with dirt, mud, groundwater, and weeds, which is particularly beneficial in areas with high water tables, heavy rainfall, or unstable soil.
• Weather-Protected Visits: Indoor community mausoleums let families visit year-round in a climate-controlled, covered hallway—avoiding snow, rain, mud, or extreme heat.
• Accessibility: Walkways around mausoleums are typically paved, level, and equipped with nearby seating, making them easier to navigate for elderly visitors or those with mobility challenges.
• investment.
• Longer Construction Phase: Building a custom private mausoleum takes roughly 12 to 18 months, whereas a traditional ground plot can be prepared immediately.
• Additional Fees: Some facilities charge ongoing maintenance or association fees for structure upkeepThe selected region shows a close-up of rusted iron decorative gates secured with a thick chain and three Master Lock padlocks tangled together.
This setup is a classic example of a "buddy system" or multi-lock daisy chain. This specific locking configuration allows multiple individuals or authorized entities (such as family members, cemetery groundskeepers, or historical preservationists) to open the gate using their own unique key. By interlocking the padlocks through separate loops of the chain or with each other, unlocking any single padlock breaks the chain's continuity and permits access without requiring everyone to share the same key

She wrote, “We shall awaken from our dullness and rise vigorously toward justice. If we fall in love with creation deeper and deeper, we will respond to its endangerment with passion.” Is this not also a lesson for our time?

Hildegard also espoused the goodness of the natural world and had a creation-focused spirituality that is very appealing to modern spiritual seekers. She believed the care of the earth was part of our responsibility as followers of Christ.

She believed that the spark of God within us was always greater than the temptation to do wrong. That’s why she could say, “Even in a world that’s being shipwrecked, remain brave and strong.”

In contrast to the teachings of St. Augustine & others who emphasized our depravity and the original sin that envelops us, Hildegard affirmed humankind’s inherent goodness. She wrote, “Every creature is a glittering, glistening mirror of Divinity.” Though, Hildegard did not ignore evil or suffering.

"We need God’s greening. Of course, Hildegard also believed that we are co-creators with God, so we have to do our part. She said we cannot thwart God’s greening power. What might we be able to do if we embraced it?" 🌿 fccucc.org/sermons/hild...

Men have cut and cleared a giant bamboo brake by the river. Human debris unearthed: chappals, plastic water bottles, plastic bags. The soil is dark and soft. Crows walk around. Dragonflies hover in humid air. The river flows on silently.

'Mila Engelhardt at a campsite in Sarydzhaz', Tian Shan Mountains, Kyrgyzstan, Ella Maillart, 1932

Soviet researcher and mountaineer Milissa 'Mila' Engelhardt (nee Lyubimova) sits inside a classic A-frame ridge tent pitched in a rocky, open landscape in Sarydzhaz, Kyrgyzstan.

This is a remote, high-altitude valley border region in the Tian Shan mountains known for its harsh terrain, sweeping glaciers and dramatic peaks. Mila is wearing a plaid shirt and a white hat, whilst physician and mountaineer Auguste Letavet stands outside in a long coat.

You will find something more in woods than in books. Trees and stones will teach you that which you can never learn from masters. 💚 – Saint Bernard #RockinTuesday #Forest #Trees #Photography #ECK
This vertical, eye-level outdoor shot features a forest scene filled with large, moss and lichen covered glacial erratics in the foreground and a rowan tree heavy with orange berries bending over them. Tall, slender pine trees rise into a partly cloudy blue sky in the background.
Large, rounded grey boulders dominate the lower half of the frame. They are piled haphazardly on top of one another, creating deep, dark gaps between them. Their surfaces are weathered, rough, and partially covered with patches of pale green lichen and dark green moss.
A thin, delicate rowan tree grows from behind the boulders on the left. Its slender, grey branches arch gracefully across the center of the image. The tree is filled with bright green, pinnate leaves and multiple heavy clusters of small, vibrant orange-red rowan berries that droop downward toward the rocks.
Behind the boulders and the rowan tree, the forest opens up into a dense grove of tall, mature pine trees with straight, dark brown trunks.
The upper portion of the frame is filled with the soft, needle-like green foliage of the pine tree canopy. Small patches of bright blue sky with thin, wispy white clouds are visible through the gaps in the branches, letting natural daylight filter down onto the scene.

Yesterday, while hiking through the forest, I found a magical treat🥰 These thriving cyclamen, in a small grassy meadow, added a brilliant burst of colour amid the autumn leaves Mother Nature is full of surprises, perhaps she knows we all need a little extra beauty these days🕊️ #PinkMon #photography
Healthy pink & white cyclamen grow in a leaf strewn grassy meadow deep within the forest. How they got there I will never know but they are a wonderful sight to see amid the umbers of the season...flowers grow as far as the eye can see
