If you are wealthy, I think you should spend more money on clothes. There's no pride in buying clothes for the lowest possible price, as this puts downward pressure on garment worker wages and increases the likelihood of exploitation.
JD Vance tweets: "She bought a $50 dress for $8.75. America: meet your next director of the federal budget!"

He retweeted his wife, who showed that she purchased a $49.99 Old Navy dress for $8.75 after markdowns and coupon codes. On May 27, 2026, the Workers Right Consortium published an article saying: "Haitian Factory Making Old Navy, Hanes Remedies Illegal Firing of Pregnant Workers, Union Leaders

After engagement by the WRC with the brands Gap Inc. (owner of Old Navy) and Gildan (owner of Hanes), 14 women who were unlawfully fired have received remedy. Each of these workers received the equivalent of 22 months’ back wages and a commitment of priority rehiring from The Willbes, a garment factory in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, that supplies the two brands.

As the WRC previously reported, The Willbes carried out a mass layoff in 2024 that resulted in the firing of more than a dozen workers who, at the time of their dismissal, were pregnant or were union leaders. The dismissals occurred in violation of their protected status under Haitian labor law and, by extension, violated each of the buyers’ codes of conduct. The Willbes is a supplier of apparel to Gap for its Old Navy brand and to Hanesbrands, now a subsidiary of the Canadian apparel corporation, Gildan.

The Willbes unlawfully dismissed the pregnant workers and the factory union leaders when it shut down four of its production buildings and laid off more than 900 employees. While some of the workers affected by the layoff were allowed to transfer to jobs in the portion of the factory that remained open, five workers who were pregnant and nine who were leaders of the factory union were illegally denied the opportunity to keep their employment."

This is remarkable.
Bar chart which shows y-axis running 0-8000, and x-axis showing years 2019 and 2024. For 2019, a light orange bar runs up to just over 6000, with a darker orange running up to 8000. For 2024, a green bar runs up to 4000, with a dark green running to about 5000. The text "40% lower" is on the lighter green bar. Text at the top of the graphic reads "Estimated air pollution deaths are down by around 40%. New analysis estimates deaths associated with air pollution in London reduced substantially between 2019 and 2024." Text at the bottom of the graphic reads "Note: darker shading shows estimated ranges. Data based on a comparison of estimated mortality burden using updated methods and a scenario-based analysis where only air pollution changes. Source: london.gov.uk/aqmortality". The Mayor of London logo sits in the bottom right-hand corner.

Estimated annual deaths associated with air pollution in London reduced by around 40% between 2019 and 2024.  Real change is possible.
Graphic with a dark green background and the Mayor of London logo at the top. Large white headline text reads “Cleaner air? Life-saving.” Below, a wide colour photo shows a tree-lined park with people walking and running along a paved path. Beneath the image, white text reads “New analysis estimates deaths associated with air pollution in London fell by around 40% between 2019 and 2024.” Smaller text underneath reads “Based on a comparison of estimated mortality burden using updated methods and a scenario-based analysis where only air pollution changes. In 2016, children at Aldgate School were breathing air that breached legal limits for air pollution. Today I returned to share new data that shows an around 40% drop in estimated annual premature deaths linked to toxic air.
Children wearing red aprons and sun hats gather around a small outdoor table while Mayor of London Sadiq Khan points at a selection of freshly picked herbs and leaves in a garden setting.A sign reading “Clean Air Garden” surrounded by green ivy leaves on a fence, with smaller text about a project supporting clean air zones around schools.Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and representative stand in a rooftop-style urban garden filled with raised beds and greenery, with one pointing toward a small fruit tree while modern buildings rise in the background.A group of children wearing red aprons and sun hats stand around a small outdoor table holding freshly picked herbs, posing together in a sunny garden space with adults behind them with Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

I’ve thought about this a lot since I was hit by a car while cycling. I want reckless drivers to face consequences ideally related to not driving anymore. But I would prefer an overhaul of the system so that regularly driving a car is not normal.
