generally, I think many librarians would be interested in: a). how tokenization works and how it influences outputs, b). best practices for prompt formatting, and c). assessing bias and limits in output content

#medlibs - is anyone else seeing an uptick in spam messages around adding external links / resources to LibGuides? I used to see one or two a month, but in the last few weeks I'm getting several every couple of days

A nonfiction book written in, let’s say, the year 1795, is most likely still around in a library somewhere and every other work it referred to is probably accessible in some archive as well. A nonfiction book written in 2007 probably cites a bunch of urls that are dead or rotted beyond recognition.

I would probably say changing culture rather than destroying culture - though it certainly impacts the incentives around sharing original creative works, especially in ways that are less easily trainable by AI.

This and the math thing in a way are good news. At the end of the day, LLMs and all their harnesses and bells and whistles still can't go beyond the distribution. They are great if you want to get to the mean. If you are out of the distribution, they can't replace you. They won't even know you.

a lecture I attended described citations as "fancy punctuation" and I've never been able to unhear it. I tried my best in an old guide (still up!) to color code elements of a citation for assistance. Sadly probably not digitally acceessible now 🙂 jewell.libguides.com/apa-citation...

The problem with education is that it's a solved problem. Students need small classes, individual attention, lots of writing, lots of feedback, access to a well-stocked library, time to think, and time to talk with their peers. We just don't like the answer, so we keep trying to do other stuff.

Not even inadequate safety guardrails - generative AI inherently behaves in non-deterministic patterns. The seeming randomness of locating security vulnerabilities without (or in spite of) direction is always going to be present in this tech. It's what makes it both potentially useful and dangerous.

I'd be interested to learn more @mmelibrarian.bsky.social - we have AI-assisted search turned on in EDS/individual databases, but not the summary feature

But are the included keywords and logic in EDS's generated search good enough to locate at least something relevant? Yes. Will that be suitable for each user? Probably not, but depends on their information need.

Peter Johnson @libraryvines.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I agree with you. One way I'm using AI to teach searching is creating an "AI-assisted search" in EBSCO's EDS: it generates a search from natural language that can be assessed, reused, and improved. But to assess/reuse/improve, users have to understand how structured searching works.

Peter Johnson @libraryvines.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
that said, relying on it solely for both discovery and "synthesis" doesn't sound feasible to me. I could see some advantage in quickly scoping out relevant articles to help build searches elsewhere
120
Peter Johnson @libraryvines.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
woah, that's a change! I think the searching context matters. In EBM or EBP where a reliable primary/secondary study is needed for quicker decision making I coudl see an argument that time savings is worth the tradeoff and better than unqualified keywords.

accounting for Boolean order of operation differences across different bibliographic databases is an underrated aspect of effective searching and @kastrel.bsky.social hits the nail on the head of the negative impact on retrevial of relevant results for systematic reviews (and other forms of KS/ES)

Updated to macOS Golden Gate, and I noticed the system is using AI to suggest titles to TextEdit files that I haven't yet applied a title to. The suggested titles are fairly accurate, but I also feel some discomfort at the intrusion. They are suggestions, but save as the file title if left unchanged

Raise your hand if today feels like the 25th anniversary of the day your childhood totally ended. It’s just a strange anniversary. Personally, I was a college student in DC who decided that day I would join the military and volunteer to go to war.

Same. Always possible that someone has gone in so deep on their work that they can no longer check their own biases, and that their concerns do have some validity. Ironically, the typical hyperbolic nature of these claims usually doesn't help their case.

Can depend on the audience and context too. Perhaps more appropriate incorporating MeSH with nursing PhDs than BSNs (research vs. clinical queries)

or look at the search at all 😉 I don't disagree with the spirit of ATM - better than just a one word search and an easier entry for many to access research. I hope that, assuming NIH survives, it has more resources to devote to better term generation (not to mention stability)

Agreed. Also an unfortunate vulnerability, either when it is insufficiently inclusive on with a concept or just stops working...has me thinking more on discussion of other automation techniques, and the differences between tools and crutches. Sometimes quite blurry!

I'm seeing the same thing for other searches. Hopefully this isn't the new normal - introduces a mapping problem when the MeSH isn't identical to the keyword (ex. "neoplasms" [mh])
