To put this in perspective chestnut trees used to be dominant species in the United States. Billions of trees were killed by fungal blight and now fully grown America chestnuts are functionally extinct. There is no getting them back. Ever. All for a data center. www.gadgetreview.com/one-of-ameri...

One of America’s Last Chestnut Groves Is About to Be Destroyed for a Data Center
A rare 200-tree American chestnut grove in West Virginia may be cleared for data-center development, but the project denies the site is on its land.

This book is 27 years old and just as relevant now as in 1999, because rape culture. It’s also been one of the most frequently banned books in American libraries since it was published, because god forbid young people know they’re not alone and have a voice to speak out against sexual violence.

I wrote about the Cornell rape case, specifically about how MAGA responses to it highlight the male supremacism on the American right. www.liberalcurrents.com/the-illusion...

There is a suspected outbreak of the plague in Russia. Yes, you read that right. And we cannot trust RFK Jr. and the Trump administration to be prepared to deal with this. We need a Democratic public health doctor in the US Senate.

Administration is "aware, monitoring the outbreak, and assessing options," an official told Axios.

I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

National Science Foundation Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress (Gift Article)
The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

Greedy corporate fbckers. Not people in boats who arrive with nothing but hope & dreams.

Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

Like many things that started out as fun (sports) or a solution to college necessities - housing, meals, connection - frats have been corrupted by the alumni & outside, corporate interests. They are not responsive to student needs - they exist to perpetuate themselves & make money for the orgs.

My hot take for today: ALL fraternities should be abolished. We don’t need them. Nothing good happens within them. Any perceived value they provide can be found elsewhere.

Consent for one act doesn’t mean consent for others. Like, if I lend you a book to read, and after you read it, you invite a bunch of people over to rip the pages out, don’t blame me because it was my choice to lend the book to you.

77 million Americans voted for national suicide in 2024. We're seeing it unfold right now: The economy vandalized, the military weakened, politicians bribed, tech run wild, immigrants terrorized, and government goon squads committing murder. Vote against all Republicans. It could be our last chance.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
