In 2026, the year of reading, we are going to adopt an open by default policy, encouraging all member services to widely publish data on catalogues, loans and membership - to enable unprecedented public insight into reading through local libraries. Is what I'm imagining is being said.

data.gov.uk with librarians (no guarantee of actual employment of librarians)
Our current focus is on setting up the National Data Library foundations on data.gov.uk by:

making it easier to identify and use trusted, useful data across national themes (new data collections pages)
creating a data manual - a single space to find clear guidance and best practices on how to use and manage public data
fixing significant issues with the original directory
setting up channels for feedback and working in the open through this roadmap and user feedback forms

If libraries must put printed notices up don't make the big heading 'Notice' or even 'Polite Notice'. The heading should be what the notice is about, not metadata about the paper.

School book banning escalates in the UK as Greater Manchester secondary school censors scores of books www.indexoncensorship.org/2026/03/scho... by @katiedd.bsky.social via @indexoncensorship.org #schoollibraries #censorship #childrights
During their investigations, the school referred to their statutory obligations under the government's Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance documents and said that materials in the school should align to them.

There is in fact no statutory guidance for school libraries because there is no obligation in law to have either a school library or a school librarian. Following Index's investigation into school library censorship in 2024, many librarians and supporting bodies have spoken to Index about the confusion this causes, with support for librarians and their books left to the whim of their schools’ senior teams.

"We need the Department for Education to think about how to make the most of school librarians," Coiffait-Gunn said. "Why is it that prisoners and general citizens are entitled to prison and public libraries, but our children are not entitled to school libraries?"

Sounds like excellent work being done. Some general points on the area of library data. * Public libraries still need a culture of open working. Much of this is behind closed doors, and less open than previously. Libraries need spaces to discuss between staff, but that is generally the exception.

The library activity dashboard is a new project visualising library activity data, as reported by library services across England. It includes Loans, Users, Visits, Events, Computer usage, and WiFi sessions. Currently in development so feedback particularly welcome!
An illustrative set of dashboard cards showing high level library usage figures such as 126 million loans, with insights like 3 loans per resident per year.A line graph of physical books loans per month, separated by lines for each age group content type. The line is generally consistent with spikes in the summer for childrens books.

How invaluable library staff are

The financial relief libraries afford

An endless variety in community activity within your libraries

A safe and welcoming space for marginalised identitiesPoster with a closed sign at the top. It reads: 'Our research indicates that 1 in 8 of Scotland's public libraries have closed between 2008 and 2024. That's 97 libraries. 3. Local authorities train and support their librarians

4. Local authorities publish annual reports that detail their library provision
