I’ve never understood why surgery was considered men’s work when women have spent centuries stitching, mending, and piecing intricate things together for both beauty and function. As if somehow those skills became masculine when the material was human tissue. #ILookLikeASurgeon

Why yes, I *am* putting an inlay mesh into my backpack repair, why do you ask? 🤣🪡🧵 Tell me again why women were ever considered 'unsuited' to being surgeons? 🤣 #GenderBias #ILookLikeASurgeon #DiversityAndInclusion
Pic of inside of repair. A short piece of black bias binding is being stitched over the join between a grey zip and a blue canvas backpack. How it's looking on the outside. It's called blindstitch because it's nearly invisible ie. the seam between blue canvas + grey zip appears as a continuous line without a noticeable change where the old one ends and the new one begins. The only clue is the faint outline of the patch around it- because, dammit, there's no skin layer to close over and hide the internal repair, like we do on people.

After a drought lasting several months, it's beautiful to see the garden holding onto the last drops from overnight rain. A little more rain is forecast in the next day or two- but we really need a deluge. 😬🙏🌧 #gardening

What I find hilarious about AI is that it is definitely "A", but lacks as much "I" as anyone who would like to avoid broken bones on a staircase. Caveat utilitor. In our academic and daily use the same. 🙏🤣
A Temu advertisement purportedly showing a staircase decorated for a formal occasion with flower bouquets and draped chiffon on the bannisters, except that this also includes giant matching drifts of chiffon down the treads of the stairs. In other words, a slippery slide, only chiffon.

Is this bumblebee knitting?🧶 Female bumblebees collect pollen by brushing the fine grains out of their hair and into the pollen baskets on their hind legs. Still, how cute would it be to see bumblebee queens wrapped in tiny woolly jumpers as they settle down to hibernate over winter?

Convergent industrial evolution! So many similarities between the actuators of animatronic puppets and robotic surgery. Finger loops, damping for tremor/unintended movement, master-slave configuration, calibrated scaling of movements... ok I'm a nerd. Go see the exhibition! 🤗🙏

As for #AI, probably one of the strongest and most sensible statements I've seen so far, both philosophically and clinically 👏👏👏-
Artificial intelligence
The ABC8 panel recognizes the growing impact of artificial intelligence in oncology but considers that its current role should be to support, rather than replace, clinical decision-making. Artificial intelligence should serve as an information enabler, assisting clinicians in synthesizing increasingly complex clinical information and facilitating treatment discussions. Final therapeutic decisions should always remain the responsibility of the multidisciplinary team and be made in partnership with informed patients, considering individual clinical circumstances, patient preferences, values and goals of care.

This #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth, with all the emphasis on early detection, let's not forget about advanced breast cancer (ABC). Despite the name, 'advanced' breast cancer can last a decade or more for some patients... and for other patients it can be tragically short.💔

A classical dancer and a martial artist discuss how their art relates to their work as surgeons! Come and join me and David O'Regan next Monday 19th Oct at 2100 Malaysia time (=2300 AEDT, midnight AEST, 1400 BST). Hosted on the Echo platform- register here- iecho.org/hub/ORG17422...?
Rhea dancing in a hotel roomWhat can surgery learn from the ballet studio-and the dojo?

Join BBASS on 19 October 2026 at 2100 hrs Malaysiatime (GMT+8) for a special session with Associate Professor Rhea Liang: surgeon, medical educator, systems-change leader- and
practising ballerina.

Using the mirror as both a practical tool and a metaphor, we will explore posture, ergonomics and the physical demands of operating while asking how reflection-in action and on action- can help us recognise, correct and continually improve our practice.

Rhea will also reflect on the
realities of a career as a woman in surgery, the prejudice and barriers she has faced, and what must change to build a more equitable, respectful and inclusive surgical culture.

Remember when #PeriodPoverty was framed as an inequity affecting young women, and how hard we had to fight patriarchal systems to get period products into schools and workplaces? This is the next challenge- recognition that it's not just periods, it's continence as well. ✊️ #HealthEquity

We got the big stinkeye from the primary school principal when our son turned up to graduation with a (very neat, not-at-all controversial) 'Ronaldo' style. Our boy looked cool as hell. The principal was ropable. We just smiled.

I know the feeling. Every year we would dutifully attend their festivals- Easter, Xmas etc. But come Chinese New Year, we'd rush to put on our outfits and complete the traditions before changing back into school uniforms for the rest of the day. Our festivals didn't count. 😖

As a school prefect, we each had to take our turn on the uniform roster, policing sock heights, skirt heights, hair ribbon colours etc. It's only in retrospect I realise how damaging that was for role modeling, school culture, internalised misogyny etc.
