You want a values led independent sovereign peaceful nation? Switzerland with a surf break? It means the kind of spending on defence that Australia has never in its history accepted, and the kind of sovereign internet policy that would ban Facebook and Instagram and other oligarchic entities

Also FWIW I don’t think very many of the opponents of AUKUS have thought to the two alternative next steps, ‘have to deal with a grumpy Pacific hegemon who isn’t an ally’, and ‘Australia becomes Pacific Switzerland with the arms spending to go with that’

‘“The Greens have been clear from day one that we’re a party of peace and non-violence, and we don’t support military aid to the Ukraine,” Shoebridge told…’ I will also say there is a pattern of politics to people who use the definite article in relation to Ukraine

Opposing military aid to Ukraine is not a ‘non-violent’ position, it is an explicit selection between the two available positions, both violent. You can’t say ‘we oppose Russia’, without then explaining, with what?

What we learn from this: - Millenials are holding steady at 15%, so the rule of #twelve will be broken sooner or later if we're patient - Zoomers really love the Greens; as a diehard ALP supporter I'm alarmed - A core aspect of Liam Hogan Thought is vindicated: Gen X will be worse than the Boomers

This man gave the country the greatest scene in the history of Australian television, and that was him saying ‘leave it Ray it’s not worth it’ to try to stop Ray Martin beating up John Safran. We should be eternally grateful for that

Nostalgia is a dangerous emotion to indulge, because given free rein it tends to fly off into fantasies about the past, prevents us from being truly present, and crowds out alternative better futures, I say as a I eye off a brand new 1989 Balmain jersey

Some Australian voters have seen the Greens’ theory of change fail repeatedly over the last 20 years, despite the Greens promising over and over again that it would work next time—but still intend to vote for them again. And I think you know the exact percentage of voters in that category

In good faith and led by the evidence, we can discuss this until we reach a consensus position

Liam Hogan @liamhogan.id.au · 30/09/2026
For better or worse there's a lot of evidence that what Australian voters absolutely hate, and are willing to vote about, is Parties who say they'll do a thing, and then, regardless of the reason, don't do the thing. That's not something that's likely to change!

Anyway as I’ve been saying for some time about overpromising and underperformance. Abandoning the [hopeful] notion that the ALP can be ‘pushed’ is one thing. Actually performing is another

It’s one of the crises of post-1991 politics in the West that parties have become structurally unable to deliver on political aims. That feeds cynicism, understandably! And it applies to everyone!

‘The new Greens leader says people are making decisions about whether to pay for insurance or pay for groceries. He says the Greens do not exist to make the Labor Party better but rather to replace Labor.’ As a message this is IMO fine but the Greens have been trying to for thirty years now.

American cultural declinism is an affectation, something their society is trying on at the moment in their feverish state. By contrast British cultural declinism is baked in, especially, particularly, in England where feeling shit about yourself, collectively, is a national habitus of long standing

Anyway it taught me some important things. How to wear a tie (the end has to stop above one’s belt). How many drinks to stop at, at lunch time. And that human organisations run on the collation of information, and you need to pay very careful attention to who it is who does that work

When our captains of industry make LLMs talk like television secretaries from the imaginary twentieth century, I think of the genuinely frightening secretarial staff of that office. The only sober people there, who you crossed at your own risk.

Liam Hogan @liamhogan.id.au · 28/09/2026
The genuinely conservative approach to LLMs should be to recoil in horror. We’ve got this good thing going already! Three hours of work a day, lunch beers, and five weeks leave a year! Don’t you dare fuck this up! Instead our political Right wants a fantasy of a world they could not have appreciated

The Mad Men era of office work lasted late into the 1990s in Australia, and into my first white collar job. Totally gender segregated, awash in alcohol, paper file based, and oddly content. A Tory society of hierarchy and mid afternoon napping. I often think of that place in the context of AI.
