Policy Update: The Green Way to Health.

Policy Spotlight: The Green Way to Health
The Green way to health updated our already excellent healthcare policy to improve the lives of LGBTIQA+ people. Here’s what it says about conversion therapy:
‘Conversion therapy is one of the most dangerous forms of coercive behaviour forced upon trans people, especially trans youth, and leads to depression, detransition, and suicide. We call for a comprehensive ban on all conversion therapy for all members of the LGBTIQA+ community.’

For Sex workers it calls for:
‘Regular health checks should be available to all sex workers, free of charge (see Health: HS402), to protect both them and their clients.’

On Gender affirming care it strengthens our policy to call for improved care:
`The Green Party calls for the support provided by the NHS to be expanded, to include a wider range of gender affirming treatments, and for ongoing fertility preservation, such as long-term gamete storage, for everyone who wants it.’

On HIV it calls for bold action to end new cases of HIV:
`The Green Party will work towards no more HIV transmissions. This requires a joined-up, evidence-based approach, including access to the HIV
prevention pill online, in pharmacies and from GP services, and opt-out HIV testing programmes in A&Es in all areas with a high prevalence of HIV.’

LGBTIQA+ Greens: Statement on the Holborn and St Pancras by-election

We want to congratulate Zack on more than tripling our vote share in Holborn and St Pancras, as well as increasing the Green Party membership from 50,000 to 200,000+ in the first year of his leadership. Additionally helping to get the Wales Green Party get their first two members of the Senedd, and our own membership of LGBTIQA+ Greens now being over 5,500. These increases show that the Green Party is a growing political force across England and Wales and we can build on this to win in future elections up and down the two countries.
We trust that Zack can deliver real hope and real change to people’s lives, including for those of us who are trans and queer as we desperately need a different direction right now for the country. So we hope the party will join us in coming together under his leadership and take the fight to Labour and Reform.

I was in St Pancras earlier but didn't, and couldn't, campaign. I had to head straight from Conference to a ward surgery, and I am all out of Annual Leave. You should vote and campaign for us though. We're unapologetically member-led. Nothing demonstrated that more than this weekend in Brighton.

Statement on the presence of Elaine Miller at Conference:

Earlier this week we learned that a conference fringe meeting (Sunday 9am Women's pelvic health: the massive, hidden environmental cost) was due to be addressed by a notorious campaigner against trans rights, Elaine Miller. We understood this to mean she would be at conference in person. With our friends in Trans Greens and Trans Young Greens, we wrote to the party to say: “Her presence at Conference would go against the policies of trans inclusion held by the Green Party of England and Wales, and that the platforming of a renowned and vocal transphobe would represent a serious safeguarding issue for our trans, non-binary, and intersex attendees. The presence of a speaker with such a notorious history of disrupting democratic processes would constitute a serious risk of intimidating trans members out of participation in the democratic processes of their party.”

We said that “We expect the party to uphold its duty to protect trans, non-binary, intersex, and gender nonconforming members” by not allowing this to happen. Sadly, as of Saturday morning, we have received no reply nor any acknowledgement beyond an automatic mailbox response. We now understand that Elaine Miller’s appearance will be via Zoom. This is a relief for many of us who are at conference. The title of the meeting is a serious and important issue relating to healthcare. However we cannot accept the platforming of a notorious campaigner against the rights of trans people.

We told the party that if we did not receive assurances we would discuss with our members what steps to take next. So here we are, asking you our members to let us know what you think we should do, at conference and afterwards, to defend and protect members and to ensure that those who campaign against queer rights do not find a platform in our party. We are at stall 12, come and let us know your thoughts. Or share them with us on our socials.

Re: Pause of gender-affirming surgeries in Wales
We are writing jointly as organisations representing and supporting trans people and the wider LGBTQ+ community in Wales, regarding the decision made by the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee to pause referrals for gender-affirming surgeries through the Welsh Gender Service.
We welcome Llais's public statement recognising the significant impact this decision has on trans people across Wales. Gender-affirming surgeries are safe and effective, backed by substantial clinical evidence. For many, gender-affirming surgery is a lifesaving procedure needed to live a normal and fulfilling life.
There has never been a national prohibition of a surgical procedure without clear evidence of harm before now. In such extraordinary circumstances, we believe the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee should have undertaken substantial patient consultation before reaching any decision.
We are calling on Llais as the Citizen Body for Health and Social Care to request an urgent meeting with the Joint Commissioning Committee and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to:
• Raise a formal issue with the Joint Commissioning Committee regarding its decision to pause surgeries and its impacts on patient safety.
• Request that Joint Commissioning Committee agree to surgeries resuming whilst the investigation takes place
We also request that Llais works with us to advocate for a formal investigation into the decision making processes that led up to this current situation.
