Something I think about a lot. No, we don’t have free will in the literal biological sense. But nihilism isn’t the logical next step from that. One person who is driven to not do harm because of their genetics and environment can help create an environment that leads fewer people to do harm.

Osborn could theoretically barter committees out Dems with, “I’ll negotiate to potentially be your 51st vote when Fetterman is being a dumbass.” The thing he can’t do and get re-elected is be a reliable vote on procedure, because that’s how you get, “He votes with Dems 95% of the time,” ads.

This entire discourse started because some dumbass TERF was like trans women can take hormones or have surgeries but the Taliban will never oppress you the way they oppress “real” women. Which is true in the sense that you can’t experience oppression under a regime that executes you first.

I think this country is about to sleepwalk its way into an incredibly lopsided midterm with a large number of Trump voters just opting out of the process because they don’t trust anybody anymore. The question becomes how do you build on that so it lasts for more than one cycle. See below.

I'm really glad that Code Switch included this part of my interview, because I think these are the points that so often get lost in the discussion of trans panic and why the WNBA might be an ideal target for those anti-trans groups to latch onto. www.npr.org/2026/09/15/n...
We're talking about actual bigotry and the belief that this group of people shouldn't have, like, the same human rights as another group. It legitimizes them. And so the WNBA is a big platform for them to be able to do that. But I think what's actually really insidious about being the target is that transphobia is rooted in white supremacist ideas of who is allowed to be a woman and what a woman should look like. Those beliefs have, you know, negatively impacted Black and brown and non-Western women throughout history.

So what you have is a league in the WNBA that is full of Black women, 7-foot-tall women, masculine women, women who don't fit kind of the traditional markers of conventional white Western ideas of womanhood. And so I don't think it's surprising that transphobic ideas around the acceptable kind of woman are coming and impacting this league.

And I think the last piece that I will say is, I think, in some ways, the lack of visibility that the league had for a lot of years really protected it. Like, it wasn't as successful as it should have been because of racism and homophobia and misogyny. And once it becomes successful, the flip side of that is it really does become a different kind of victim of those ideas. And the fact that you have a league that is all women, predominantly Black women, largely queer women who have been successful and they don't need men to do it, and their product is not necessarily for men. I think that's a threat to the status quo. And so it's not just about protecting women's sports. It's actually about dismantling them from the inside.

One thing that really pisses me off is that I genuinely think, “No, government needs to get the fuck out peoples’ health care decisions and let parents and doctors decide,” would actually win you more votes in Texas than capitulating on this. This is a different issue than sports.

I agree it’s real, but scolding people does not solve the problem. It’s the responsibility of candidates to earn peoples’ votes, not the other way around. Hillary could’ve, for example, added single-payer to her platform after the primary, saying, “Bernie showed this has broad support, let’s do it!”

Woman is a gender historically assigned to people who either have the capacity to give birth at some point in their lives or presumed to have. Any laws separating men and women have always been based on socially constructed gender. There are no changing rooms, sports, or prisons in nature.

You know how Trump is promising to give everybody $5000? That would’ve actually been a really good idea both economically and politically in 2009 when everybody was unemployed and broke and inflation wasn’t an issue. But the same centrists would’ve bitched about it “disincentivizing work”.

Reading this Adam Jentleson article about how if Democrats just win 370 electoral votes and huge majorities, they’ll keep them through the midterms and like… In 2008 Dems won 365 electoral votes, 257 House Seats, and 59 Senate seats and lost it all 2 years later by not using it to actually deliver.
Jentleson writes, he or she will have to win not a bare majority of two hundred and seventy electoral votes but a supermajority of three hundred and seventy—an outcome that would require victories in states such as Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina. Jentleson believes that this will "usher in majorities in bot houses of Congress" big enough to survive the midterms, and hold power long enough so that Democrats cannot only enact their agenda but also flip the balance of the Supreme Court. "Settling for smaller but ideologically purer majorities is a path to purgatory at best," he concludes, "and losing to fascism at worst."

Broadly speaking: I think you should express your anger at Dems caving on trans sports bans. I also do not think it's productive to let that anger turn into doomerism about the inevitability of becoming Labor when a lot of the Dems doing it are trying to win states Trump carried by double digits. /1

There's a Supreme Court case this term that is likely going to weaken Title IX, and these peoples' long-term vision is unequivocally a world where women can't get a passport without their husband's approval. We hopefully will never see that world, but it's absolutely their goal.

The thing people need to know about the WA "parental rights" initiative is that it actually takes away parental rights to immediate notification if your child is sexually assaulted at school. This is what happens when the ADF gives you a carbon copy of a Louisiana law and says put it on the ballot.

TL;DR, patriarchy is a hell of a drug that any of us can get suckered into consuming. For Queer and BIPOC women, this is less likely to manifest itself in supporting MAGA than cis-het white women because they literally call us slurs based on other parts of our identities.

A more productive way to understand what happened is a lot of parents (mainly moms) were pushed beyond tenable stress levels having a primary lever of state support now gone. And when society teaches women to never admit they can’t do it alone, that stress is easy to channel into blaming others. /1

I think Dr. Haenschen is right here about how to de-program MAHA folks. I just don’t think the next Presidential candidate needs to get that in the weeds on this. Childhood vaccines are incredibly popular (75-91%), and they should just say we’re going back to taking politics out of vaccines.

@vox.com breaks down why I-638 is more extreme than other measures like it in the country. All girls will be discouraged from playing sports under I-638 because they will be subjected to invasive, embarrassing genital exams. We must take a stand this November and Vote NO on I-638. #NoHateWAState
A screenshot of an article from Vox on a pale purple background. The article’s header image shows three girls in sports uniforms smiling and holding up a peace sign. The headline says: What happens when a blue state votes on trans sports? Four states have midterm ballot measures on the issue. Washington’s would go further than any law in the country. Below the headline, an excerpt from the article reads: “School sports is a place where kids can belong, a place of inclusion, where they can learn to work as a team and learn dedication,” Kelsey Gellner, a pediatric nurse based in Seattle, told me. “Tens of thousands of girls will be impacted by this to purposely exclude 10 children. That’s insane.” A dark purple footer with white text says “Vote NO on I-638”

In response to questions about Washington’s trans sports ban initiative leading to invasive genital exams, a spokesperson for the sponsors literally told @vox.com that they should’ve written a better initiative.
while crafting the ballot language. "I agree with you that it should have been explicit to say, 'Here's all the ways in the universe that you could verify a child's sex'and we didn't do that, and that's where we are now," Herzberg told me.

The, "It all goes to consultants," narrative covers up the bigger and much more important truth. The means of mass communication are owned largely by our political adversaries, and we have to shell out billions of dollars to to them every two years to have a chance of winning elections.

When Markey was elected the vibe among a lot of younger aspiring mass politicians was like come on dude, we put Ted Kennedy in there when he was 30 so he could grow up to run the place if he doesn’t become President. Warren was 60, but also a rock star and contender for the latter.

Lexi Koren @lexikoren.bsky.social · 02/09/2026
The fact that Markey keeps drawing challengers demonstrates why Mills would’ve been a bad candidate. There are plenty of octogenarian Senators, but they chair powerful committees, so their existence is justified. Markey doesn’t because he was 67 when elected. Glad he beat Kennedy and Moulton tho.
