Any political party which tells you money doesn’t buy influence is either lying to you or has never attended a political fundraiser. Currency is access- and that’s for everyone. My opener to Sunday with Lewis Goodall @lbc.co.uk this morning. youtu.be/uLMuirAe--I?...

Am on @lbc with @lewisgoodall.com shortly talking about how two crypto billionaires have given £72m to Reform and why British democracy is for sale.

Astounding story. Reform receives a *second* £36m donation from a crypto billionaire in 48 hours. Christopher Harborne- the £5m benefactor- has matched Ben Delo's money pound for pound. £72m in total. Approaching US politics sort of money. www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/202...

This is smart analysis. I had not thought of it previously, but it would be politically suicidal before the Holborn and St Pancras by-election for the government to go ahead with: 1. More drilling in the North Sea; and 2. Mahmood's immigration reforms.

Makerfield shaped the government Burnham formed- Holborn might just shape the government it becomes. Latest from me on Polanski's big gamble and why this by-election could be among the most important yet. goodallandgoodluck.substack.com/p/zack-polan...

"She had the politics of authenticity before the politics of authenticity became a thing." "She managed to make both Republicans and Democrats adore her." @jonsopel1.bsky.social and @lewisgoodall.com reflect on how Dolly Parton did politics, without ever doing politics.

Almost never feel sad about celebrity deaths- but felt so moved all day today about Dolly Parton. What a woman. The story of America. We’ve recorded a special ep of News Agents about her politics and why she- uniquely- transcended even the bitterest partisan divides. In your feeds at 5pm.

Dolly Parton dead- hard to think of a more famous woman in the world. A few years ago, there was a poll which showed she was the cultural figure both Democrats and Republicans most mutually loved and admired. Virtually unique. Testament to her achievement.

This will be a national crisis- adding to the profound generational inequities which already bedevil Britain. Working class kids have long not had the support they needed as the mass employment industrial world disappeared. Will we repeat the mistake with graduates? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Good piece in capturing some of the ways that Arday became both a symbol and a pawn within what Goodall calls "the ceaseless, airless, brainless culture war".

The term “witch hunt” is overused in politics. Perhaps not now. Quite a bit of the British media should ask themselves serious questions as to whether the coverage they gave to this man was remotely proportionate. Likewise there are Qs for Cambridge- and whether they discharged their duty of care.

Sorry not logged on here for a bit- you've made tonnes of points which I'd be more than happy to take up your offer on and come to a Vienna event to discuss. But I do genuinely think that an assumption of rationality on our side vs emotion on the other was a huge part of the problem with the debate.

And now time for that uniquely British summer tradition: where we castigate ourselves, our education system and most of all our young people for going on to be better educated than ever before.

"Where it went very wrong was with Liz Truss, when she only appointed people who supported her to cabinet. We all know where that ended..." Why is factionalism so hard for modern party leaders to get a grip on, and will it tear the two-party system apart?

Why do you assume it was emotion? Was it not emotion on the EU side too? Why do you assume that a reasonable number of voters wouldn’t have been swayed- entirely rationally- by a bigger concession?

You’re assuming that any reduction in transmission, regardless of cost, automatically justifies school closures. That’s precisely the point under dispute.

Everyone understands that. The debate is whether, after the risk profile became clear, govts adequately weighed that risk against the immense damage school closures inflicted on millions of children, particularly the poorest. That’s a legitimate policy question, not Covid denial.

Lewis Goodall @lewisgoodall.com · 02/08/2026
Evidence like…children were at very low risk?

Lewis Goodall @lewisgoodall.com · 02/08/2026
Nobody is saying Covid deaths were preferable. The Q is whether every intervention was worth it. Democracies have to weigh competing harms, not assume that any measure labelled 'anti-Covid' was automatically justified. We're only just reckoning with the costs to kids of school closures.
1401
Lewis Goodall @lewisgoodall.com · 02/08/2026
I’m not denying that restrictions protected some vulnerable people or that families suffered terrible losses. My point is that we still haven’t had an honest reckoning with the educational, developmental and mental-health costs imposed on millions of children, especially those from poor backgrounds.
