Anne Carson, If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho.

Text reads Some men say an army of horse and some men say an army on foot and some men say an army of ships is the most beautiful thing on the black earth. But I say it is

A Shinto priest at the torii (gate) of Itsukushima Shrine at low tide on Itsukushima Island, Japan, circa 1955. (Photo by Three Lions/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

a Shinto priest (kannushi) standing in quiet contemplation before the monumental grand gate (ō-torii) of Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island. Framed from behind, the solitary priest—clad in a traditional white upper garment (byakue) and pleated hakama trousers—is visually dwarfed by the colossal scale of the sacred structure. Positioned on the exposed, wet sand during low tide (hikishio), he gazes past the massive wooden pillars toward the distant, hazy mountain ridge across the Seto Inland Sea. The dramatic low-angle perspective emphasizes the soaring curvature of the gate's top lintel (kasagi), establishing an arresting visual dialogue between human devotion, monumental timber architecture, and the natural landscape.

Architecturally, the grand gate of Itsukushima represents a masterwork of ryōbu (four-legged) torii design, characterized by main upright pillars reinforced by four subsidiary legs (chigo-bashira) for structural stability against severe coastal tides and sea winds. Constructed from centuries-old, natural camphor trunks (kusunoki), the base of the gate reveals thick encrustations of barnacles and water marks, marking the high-water line where the structure ordinarily appears to float magically atop the ocean surface. Historically, Miyajima was revered as a sacred island (shintai-zan) so pure that the entire shrine complex was built over the intertidal zone to avoid disturbing the holy soil. The ō-torii thus functions as a monumental ketsukai—a sacred boundary separating the profane physical world from the divine domain of the island's three tutelary sea goddesses (Munakata Sanjoshin).

Taken during the mid-1950s—a decade defined by Japan’s quiet postwar reflection and cultural renewal—the photograph captures an enduring moment of spiritual continuity.

WPL also allows 4 overseas players right? And that means a many up and coming indian players miss out.. and yet everyone touts how the WPL has improved the Indian game in leaps🤷🏻 imo, overseas players make the games more exciting and competitive.

Bluesky is frankly rubbish for people outside of the U.S. / the western world. So much is happening in India -- hunger strikes and youth protests -- to change the system and barely a peep here.

Sorry to hear you guys are being abused for sharing an opinion. English cricket seems quite shambolic atm..And it reflects in their performances-- They wilt under not just the pressure of the game but expectations and noise around it.

Excellent wing by a superb Indian team. The commentary -- by the English commentators esp. --was interesting though stating that England may have lost because they didn't have enough time to practice post the WC final. Erm.. It's home conditions. 🤷🏻

Agree.. The fact that both SL and Bangaladesh also won matches in alien conditions was good to see..India is the only team that posed some resistance to the Aussies. But overall everyone seemed awed by the well-oiled Oz machine.

Great round-up. One quibble--why so much India bashing ? WI made the semis only because of the lopsided groups acc. to you guys -so why would they automatically qualify for the Olympics? ICC / BCCI is shady certainly, but even based on WT20 rankings the Indian team would qualify ahead of WI. No?

Welp.. They are back! Order is restored in the cricketing world 😏 FWIW, the only way to win a World Cup is to defeat the mighty Aussies. England hasn't in far too long..that probably played on their minds..
