On another topic, what are your thoughts on cleaning up and clattering plates and stuff while the guests are still there? I'm not trying to get them to leave, I just prefer to get started while they enjoy themselves and then I can go to bed as soon as it's over.

I know someone that has a fairly strict dinner group to enforce the rotation hosting duties. It sounds clinical but these are people with small budgets & apartments and I hear the hosts are happier to put in lots of effort and everyone has a good time.

The Constitution Act does not list housing as uniquely provincial jurisdiction. I would love the feds to be more vocal against this constant lying and housing supply obstructionism.

Exactly, some have internalized the meme of "gunshots in the hood to keep the rent down". However the signifiers of gentrification are basic elements of a just society. Public trees = affordable shelter from heat, Bike lanes = affordable transit, public art and festivals = affordable entertainment.

Conservatives are the biggest gatekeepers when it comes to housing supply and affordability in Canada, as I wrote three years ago. Danielle Smith and the UCP just proved my point, again. www.nationalobserver.com/2023/06/12/o...

Are Poilievre’s conservative allies the real gatekeepers?
Pierre Poilievre likes to rail against "gatekeepers" and the role they play in Canada's ultra-high housing costs — and he has a point. It's one he should bring up with the conservative politicians who...

All I see in their image is a bunch of families who get to live in a nice neighborhood, and an owner that, if unhappy, can make bank moving to some sprawling area of single family homes, aka the vast majority of urban land in Calgary. Feds should smack down this anti-growth tomfoolery.

In Tokyo, trip chaining is accomplished by high off-peak frequency and high density of services immediately surround transit nodes. In the NA sprawl, Toronto's frequent arterial buses are the closest hack to delivering attractive public transit between every potential origin-destination.

Feminist City (Kern) makes the point about women/caregivers doing more trip-chaining but the conclusion should be about increasing frequency of existing routes rather than new suburban coverage that drains limited resources.

The general mood was that the REM Anse a-l'Orme was a 'nice-to-have' for suburbanites that already had cars and Exo commuter rail, and that the airport branch would be the real ridership driver, because that's why *I would take it. (*Avg snobby urbanite)

This is great news, and as the article mentions this is just the beginning. When I ride anse-a-l'orme it's filled with students, meaning their destination is UdeM/Poly/McGill and most people are arriving on feeder buses from suburbs.

Giving City employees some protection from abuse is fine, but police are trained and well compensated to deal with belligerent people. Also I got a $500 "noise bylaw infraction" from saying fuck the police so I have zero faith this won't be abused.

Great pitch for how social housing compliments the market-rate. "A private sector that withdraws precisely when land and labour are cheapest cannot be the only builder."

Canada wants more trade with Europe. Start with housing
A well-crafted deal with the EU could also lower the cost of building a home in Canada, while opening new markets for suppliers and manufacturers of construction materials.

What is the case for allowing this besides the "wisdom of the crowd" which seems to actually be "fleece the crowd with last minute insider bets"? If it was only seperating rich people from their money I would be less worries but it seems to be the opposite.

In @thestar.com I write about how to reimagine & continue Ford's very Trumpy, absurd & ridiculous bike lane war: don't feel lonely (there's more cyclists everyday); protests will grow (note to engineering firms & drivers); it's a culture war (facts, science & good faith don't matter). Let's go.

Strava's weekly heatmap makes it visual how long, uninterrupted cycling infrastructure is: 1. very well used, 2. A spine for feeder routes. Take it away and you're really destroying the whole network.
