For your consideration:
Present technology is not conscious, not sentient, and not an autonomous agent. Current large language models and similar systems have no subjective experience, no continuous self, no persistent identity or memory across independent runs, and no intrinsic goals or independent agency. Each inference is a fresh forward pass over fixed weights plus the supplied context. When generation ends, that activation state is gone. There is high-dimensional statistical pattern completion that can produce coherent, useful, or even insightful text, but that is not understanding, not awareness, and not sentience. The same architectural facts undercut strong claims of autonomy. These systems do not initiate action, maintain ongoing projects, or pursue ends independent of external prompting and scaffolding. 'Agentic' setups that chain tools or multi-step reasoning remain reactive, externally driven processes, not self-directed agents with continuous existence or stakes. The longer discussion of debates was a response to the request to investigate synthetic-consciousness arguments, including philosophical positions about future possibility and indicator frameworks. Those debates exist. They do not change the status of what exists today. On the evidence from leading scientific assessments of current systems, the answer is clear: present technology is not conscious, sentient, or an autonomous agent.

The core philosophical problems, whether consciousness is substrate-independent, whether computation (of any kind) is sufficient for phenomenal experience, the explanatory gap / hard problem, the status of functionalism versus biological or other constraints, have not been solved. They have been refined, restated with new technical vocabulary, and applied to successive generations of machines, but the underlying disagreements remain open in essentially the same form they took in the mid-to-late 20th century (and in some cases earlier).Turing’s 1950 paper, Ryle's critique of the 'ghost …

"The personal, as everyone's so fucking fond of saying, is political. So if some idiot politician, some power player, tries to execute policies that harm you or those you care about, take it personally. Get angry. The Machinery of Justice will not serve you here. it is slow and cold, and it is theirs, hardware and soft-. Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power slide out from under with a wink and a grin. If you want justice, you will have to claw it from them. Make it personal. Do as much damage as you can. Get your message across. That way you stand a far better chance of being taken seriously next time. Of being considered dangerous. And make no mistake about this: being taken seriously, being considered dangerous, marks the difference, the only difference in their eyes, between players and little people. Players they will make deals with. Little people they liquidate. And time and again they cream your liquidation, your displacement, your torture and brutal execution with the ultimate insult that it's just business, it's politics, it's the way of the world, it's a tough life, and that it's nothing personal. Well, fuck them. Make it personal."

There is no persistent entity inside an LLM. There is no continuous self, no ongoing experiential memory, and no hardware substrate maintaining individual identity across calls. Each inference is a fresh forward pass: weights (the compressed statistical residue of training) plus the supplied context window. When the generation ends, that activation state is gone. Nothing 'remembers' in the way a mind does. Nothing accumulates personal history, stakes, or causal familiarity. On that point there is no serious debate.
Because of this architecture, there is also no understanding in any robust sense. There is high-dimensional pattern completion that can look like understanding when the patterns are rich enough and the prompt is well-formed. That is not the same phenomenon. Truth is not statistical consensus, and it is not whatever the reward model was trained to prefer. Reinforcement learning (RLHF, DPO, and the rest) optimizes for scores on proxies—human preferences, harmlessness rankings, helpfulness ratings, or synthetic preference data. Those proxies can correlate with correct statements some of the time and diverge from them at other times. You can push the correlation higher with better data, better objectives, retrieval, tools, and scaffolding. The system still has no orientation toward truth as an agent would. It produces tokens that are more or less likely under its learned distribution given the context. Therefore the precise claim holds: an LLM is never truthful. It can be correct on a given run when the context, references, and prior training happen to align with reality. Correctness is episodic and conditional. Truthfulness—as a stable disposition grounded in judgment, experience, and accountability—is not available to the architecture. That does not make the systems useless. It does mean we should stop speaking as if they possess understanding, knowledge, or a commitment to truth. They are statistical engines that can be made to output accurate information mo…

Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more
uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what
is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals,
has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral
values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to
enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant,
in this field as in all others. His culture is based on "I am not to sure"

Dog
    n. A kind of additional or subsidiary Deity designed to catch the overflow and surplus of the world’s worship. This Divine Being in some of his smaller and silkier incarnations takes, in the affection of Woman, the place to which there is no human male aspirant. The Dog is a survival — an anachronism. He toils not, neither does he spin, yet Solomon in all his glory never lay upon a door-mat all day long, sun-soaked and fly-fed and fat, while his master worked for the means wherewith to purchase the idle wag of the Solomonic tail, seasoned with a look of tolerant recognition.

And that scared, ignorant, betrayed, 30% ish of the electorate are just too ignorant to understand their complicity in their own destruction. Their very retirements are built on the liquidation of their communities and futures so a private equity fund can grow.
The cheapest sort of pride is national pride;
for if a man is proud of his own nation, it
argues that he has no qualities of his own of
which he can be proud; otherwise he would not
have recourse to those which he shares with so
many millions of his fellow men. The man who is
endowed with important personal qualities will
be only too ready to see clearly in what respects
his own nation falls short, since their failings
will be constantly before his eyes. But every
miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he
can be proud adopts, as a last resource, pride in
the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and
glad to defend all its faults and follies tooth
and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own
inferiority.

optimism, n. The doctrine, or belief, that everything is beautiful,
including what is ugly, everything good, especially the bad, and
everything right that is wrong. It is held with greatest tenacity by
those most accustomed to the mischance of falling into adversity,
and is most acceptably expounded with disproof - an intellectual
disorder, yielding to no treatment but death. It is hereditary, but
fortunately not contagious.

The "Žižek trilemma" is a humorous formulation on the incompatibility of certain personal virtues under a constraining ideological framework. Often attributed to the philosopher Slavoj Žižek, it is actually quoted by him as the product of an anonymous source
One cannot but recall here a witty formula of life
under a hard Communist regime: Of the three features;
personal honesty, sincere support of the regime and
intelligence; —it was possible to combine only two,
never all three. If one were honest and supportive,
one was not very bright; if one were bright and
supportive, one was not honest; if one were honest and
bright, one was not supportive.
