Hear me out: sometimes it’s nice to learn about something just because … it’s fun and interesting! College is not supposed to be about optimizing yourself for A Career with no detours. It’s supposed to be an opportunity to learn and grow *as a human being* — much of which happens outside your major.

Seriously, this is incredible. People want to do these things, but they’re so often out of reach.

For some reason randomly remembering when I got in touch with someone I went to grad school with for a friend because his employer was hiring, and his response was basically like “we’re a really good school—I don’t know if your colleagues where you teach could keep up. She probs wont be considered.”

If a blue wave comes to pass, there needs to be some kind of citizens’ campaign to let Dems know this in no uncertain terms.

For the first time in a long time, I have one day each week when I don’t have class to teach, and I have no standing meetings. It is amazing what I can get done in a working day with no other obligations.

This does not allay my fear that Dems will get elected, say “we need to move on,” and then do nothing to punish the absolute lawlessness going on all around us. Every election cannot be “the most important election of our lifetime.” Real consequences ASAP.

It’s a win-win for them: they get to destroy American universities while also destroying our R&D sector. What could go wrong?

Has anyone made the switch from an iPhone to a different brand of smartphone? How much of a hassle was it? Thinking about it, but I’ve been using iPhones for 16 years. And I am slightly technologically challenged 😬

Here’s a question I didn’t see on that US dialect survey that I’m curious about: Which of these do you use/do you find acceptable: (a) The dishes need washed. (b) The dishes need washing. (c) The dishes need to be washed. Or are some or all OK? Interested to know also where you’re from or grew up

Who could have predicted that handing out tax dollars to completely unregulated enterprises would produce bad outcomes?

At the Dolly museum in Dollywood, there’s a big sign right as you exit that says something like “we can’t just hope for peace and understanding—we have to work for it.” Wish more people would take that to heart. Hope she’s resting peacefully now.

This is such an insidious and cynical way to make sure someone is making money on what is supposed to be public education. Maybe the schools wouldn’t be struggling so much if they were funded properly and if we had actual social services.

The Haslams have more than $16 billion, and for some reason they are currently trying to take $600 million of Ohio taxpayer dollars to construct a new stadium for the private NFL team they own, while they use their public position (and the team’s employees) to promote extremely partisan politics

OK, hear me out: BBC/PBS does the second half of the Poldark book series (after the time jump), bringing back the original cast from the 2015-20 series. It’s perfect, because it’s about a decade later and the time jump is also about a decade. Too niche?

Not saying this is a reasonable explanation by Hassett, but people may not know that public school districts often lay off a certain number of teachers each spring “just in case,” but then usually hire them back over the summer when they know what their needs will be for the new school year

Serious question: the Covid mRNA vaccines provide excellent protection but only for like 4-6 weeks, right? Will an mRNA flu vaccine be similar? Doesn’t seem super helpful when the flu season is more like 4-6 months…

Someone on Bluesky (can’t remember who 😬) shared this recipe last week. Made it as directed for a dinner party today, and it was fantastic! Highly recommend if you like cheesecake and the toffee-ish flavors of vanilla and brown butter.

In the 1910s and 20s, people would talk about how much better theater was before electric lighting. It was just somehow way better when the stage was lit by gaslight!

Again, the only credible position on this is automatic universal voter registration and free national ID cards. If you don't believe in these things - as no one, including John McGuire, in the far right authoritarian party does - then the <entire point> of this is mass disenfranchisement.

The “duplicate programs” line he’s onto now isn’t much better. If you live outside one of the Cs, you still deserve to be able to pursue the degree you want at the school you can get to. Not every single thing is supposed to make a profit.

I live in a rural-ish area. There is a house I drive by frequently that had multiple Tr*mp signs/flags. Now instead, they have “no data centers” signs and signs for a progressive, independent candidate whose main plank is banning data centers. Dems are really, really squandering an opportunity here.

Vivek Ramaswamy has spent years saying he wants to close Ohio colleges. Now he’s trying to backtrack and rewrite history. Every Ohio student deserves the opportunity to earn a quality education without having to leave their community or take on debilitating debt.

Four years ago, Biden gave a speech warning about the dangers to democracy and the networks refused to air it because it was "political." I wonder if Trump making a partisan case for relitigating the 2020 election and calling for his political opponents to be jailed is going to be "political" too?
As Biden warned about democracy’s collapse, TV networks aired reruns
While broadcasters typically air a prime-time address by the president, they determined that this speech was more ‘political’ than newsworthy for live coverage

Mainstream Respectable opinion is that people joking about a bad person's death represents a culture of cruelty, but really it represents a culture of impunity. It's a coping mechanism for watching someone do evil their whole life and never seeing consequences

Once again, we don’t have to live like this, Ohio. We once had among the best public schools in the country. Wish I had the choice to send my tax dollars to public schools only instead of vouchers. If parents get to choose, why can’t I? I’m the one funding them.

The belief (sincere or not) that “other people (we all know who they are, *wink wink*) don’t work as hard as I do and therefore don’t deserve what I have” has been held by basically every entitled white guy and/or rich person I’ve ever come across. It is, generally, why we can’t have nice things.
