I go by Leo, and my partner (who sometimes works in primary schools) tells me that every class she works in now has at least one Leo, and that she's had to get used to yelling out my name at kids 😅

Rich Larson has some great collections of sci-fi shorts (Changelog, Tomorrow Factory). Also some novels but I'm less familiar with those.

Most people agree when surveyed! They're not all wrong. I think the "expert consensus" doesn't take into account the fact that for most people now their only free time to experience daylight is in the evenings. That has to have psychological and health benefits

Idk, I'm team DST, as are most people when surveyed. Society is now structured such that most people only get to spend time outside in the evenings. Permanent DST would significantly increase the amount of daylight most people experience on a daily basis.

I'd read the most recent of the Joseph Heath blog posts referenced here when it came out a few months ago and it was one of the more insightful things I've read about populism. Highly recommended

I think another plausible outcome would be that memories gradually peter out, with the only ones remaining being those which underpin our sense of who we are - even these stop being memories and start being these mythical half-remembered stories we tell ourselves...

Article vraiment très informatif venant de la CBC: "So, while Duhaime’s campaign rhetoric rings true for corporations, high-income earners, and childless individuals, Quebec's system of transfers means lower-income families actually face some of the lightest net tax burdens on the continent."

ANALYSIS | Is Quebec actually the most taxed jurisdiction in North America? | CBC News
With the rising cost of living front and centre in the Quebec election campaign, a familiar refrain has emerged: Quebec is the most taxed jurisdiction in North America. But is the claim actually true?...

Very disappointing to see influential urbanists keep pushing these false good ideas. Feels like planning from 20 years ago. 1) Towers immediately adjacent to transit stations are good. 2) Concentrating housing on arterials is bad. 3) 3-4 stories is too unambitious for Toronto's needs.

leopoldwdb @handle.invalid · 18/08/2026
Yikes. Disappointing to see someone with your background double-down on concentrating housing on arterials (I thought we were past that kind of inequitable planning), as well as opposing all high-density development even if it's immediately transit-adjacent. Also, 3 floors is far too unambitious!

This side streets thing is the majority of bike routes in Vancouver and it's not that great. Aside from some prioritized crossing across main streets you're basically just biking on residential streets with no destinations on them, parking on both sides and drivers don't give you special treatment😪

I'd never really dug into NYC rent stabilization/control schemes (what's with this 3-tier system based on building age? Why based on the unit and not on the tenant? Etc). While operating costs should track inflation, it doesn't seem evident to me that operating income should as well?...

Tactical urbanism is great not just because it calls out inaction on specific issues, but because it forces municipal leaders to actually make a decision for once, and not just hide behind the status quo as if it's the natural state of things.
