our decomp community will probably be moving in a more private and closed direction to keep these kind of people out now. it's unfortunate, but in the current climate it's all that can be done to maintain any sanity. we're in a new much shittier era now, and we just have to adapt as best we can

a lot of the cool decomp / port stuff that's been done would not be possible without people like encounter, and others in our once niche community that dedicated hundreds of hours to this hobby. to have that work and it's creators abused like this is insulting to say the least.

Lots of labour reporting (and more to come) on @verticalslicenews.bsky.social today. That won't always be the case, but it's important! If workers don't feel secure and supported in the workplace, there won't be any games left to play.

I am really god damn worried about Sega, but I am not going to give it the benefit of the doubt while it confidently blows its own brains out using a gun wrapped in the skin of things I've loved in the past. You don't get to just get away with this and pretend you still have integrity.

I don't think this should be a legal route to take. Releasing something not only fundamentally broken, but outright replacing something deeply beloved then just trying to sweep the entire thing under the rug, is simply attempting to avoid accountability. This is outright cultural vandalism.

Regardless of your thoughts on generative AI, I would gently suggest it is moronic for a company to position itself as an antagonist. "Programming is hard. So, instead of doing that, we vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher." — I mean, why open with THAT.

Real developers giving their opinion on why this sucks. I had to stop what I was doing, and actually screen cap these last 2 statements because they are so important. I quote: "If you can't be arsed to make it, why should I be arsed to play it, let alone pay you for it."
"For an engine that has easily allowed us to do so much of our game DIY with a completely in-house render pipeline and tons of in-house editor tools, it's insanely frustrating to see Unity pushing things so hard in the exact opposite direction," he wrote.

Schaeffer notes he has been a devout Unity user since 2008, when he saved up money during his high school years to nab a Unity Pro educational license for $750 back when it was needed form post-screening and real-time shadows. To say he is disappointed in the company would be an understatement of some magnitude.

"The engine is unmatched for me and I hate seeing it die at the hands of such a foolish company," he continued. "[...] I'd like to go on record and say fuck GenAI. Fuck the companies that have made billions developing automated plagiarism machines and fuck anyone defending it. They don't make tools, they use the Earth's resources to shove human culture into a perpetually self-feeding meat grinder."
Second quote from Super Spline Studios co-founder Aron Durkin: ""If you can't be arsed to make it, why should I be arsed to play it, let alone pay you for it."

Fascinating how bosses will often try to frame layoffs as a positive thing. “We’re now a leaner, meaner, hungrier team” as if anyone has ever enjoyed or done their best work while being overworked, stressed, and hangry

A big goal for Vertical Slice is to amplify the voices of devs across the industry. Yes, we need to document major announcements, but it's also vital to scrutinise those marketing beats. Case in point: The recent generative AI gubbins from Unity/Google. Here's the dev view, and it ain't pretty.

the company's total revenue in 2025 was $23 million. it was spending $18.5 million per month before legal fees (and it has been sued in a suicide case + is facing tons of regulatory scrutiny). it could barely cover one month of expenses with its revenue for the entire year

Character is still losing $9 million a month AFTER - laying off employees - making its model worse on purpose to be cheaper - moving to open source models - adding usage limits - spamming ads in its product - adding new in-app paid products
26. At all times, Character has struggled with profitability and its operational
expenditure has been high. For example, in the second half of 2024, following the 2024
Transaction, Character’s operating expenses (excluding legal fees) averaged approximately $21.9
million per month, including monthly compute costs of approximately $13.8 million. In fiscal year
2025, operating expenses (excluding legal fees) averaged approximately $18.5 million per month,
including monthly compute costs of approximately $10.0 million.
27. Character has, however, taken significant steps to reduce its operating burn,
including transitioning inference workloads to lower-cost GPU capacity and post-training openweight
models rather than developing proprietary foundation models. At the same time, Character
reduced its employee headcount and consolidated its facilities. As a result, operating expenses
(excluding legal fees) had declined to approximately $13.3 million by August 2026, a reduction of
approximately 39% from the second half of 2024 monthly average and approximately 28% from
the 2025 monthly average. Finally, net cash burn per month had declined to approximately $8.2
million by August 2026, compared with monthly averages of approximately $21.5 million in the
second half of 2024 and approximately $17.6 million in 2025Character has also worked to build and diversify revenue, which it primarily derives
from subscriptions and in-app advertising. Monthly subscription revenue was approximately $0.6

million in January 2024, but due to increased marketing and other efforts, by August of 2026, this
revenue stream was $2.8 million. In mid-2025, Character launched in-app advertising and
partnered with multiple advertising networks to generate additional revenue sources. In March
2026, Character entered into an amended programmatic revenue-share and incentive arrangement
with a leading online advertisement provider. Monthly advertising revenue grew from
approximately $0.5 million in July 2025, its first full month, to approximately $2.5 million in
August 2026. In early 2026, Character also introduced in-app purchases. As a result of all these
efforts, total revenue grew from approximately $7.4 million in fiscal year 2024 to approximately
$23.6 million in fiscal year 2025.

Knowing the hellhole I’ve been in for the last 30 years was once a sundown town makes so much more sense in light of this place’s hypocrisy. It makes me wonder if my fellow peers from years ago—the ones who forsook learning Mandarin or Cantonese—were ever aware of this hellhole’s past.

The perfect way to put it. They found a way to worm a subscription between you and your normal work.
A screenshot of a post on Threads by Joe Hill. The post reads: "Here’s a thought about the purveyors of AI. They aren’t selling assistance—they’re selling dependency. You give up on acquiring one skill after another, give up on the knotty, meaningful struggle to acquire those skills and AI takes over. It isn’t freeing up time so you can make more of yourself. It’s encouraging cognitive surrender so you can be less."

Probably burned my remaining bridges in the business, but I recently put out a statement regarding the increasing use of “generative AI” in British indie wrestling.
I’ve seen more and more promotions and wrestlers using generative AI, some of whom I work with, and I want to make something VERY clear:

I do not give anybody permission to use my likeness in any AI-generated posters, promos, clips, etcetera, and I consider any such use to be a personal and professional violation.

Do not feed me to a tech company’s algorithm. They’ve stolen enough of my writing and video material for their “AI training” already. That’s how Alleged Intelligence works, by the way - it’s a plagiarism tool, regurgitating every shred of “content” fed to it.

Leaving aside the horrific impact AI data centers have on the environment, you’re not creating anything by typing prompts into a box. Why should anyone be impressed with some cool photoshoot, promo, or move when you didn’t really do it? At best, Alleged Intelligence is self-insert reality fanfic and it makes wrestling truly live up to its reputation as fake.

I won’t try to sway you away from it, but I hope you reconsider and really look into AI. Whatever you do, leave me out of it.

Commander Sterling.

Generations are useful as reference points, and there are of course many cultural differences between older and younger people, but I got fucking sick of “Millennials ruin everything” in the 2010s and I refuse to help pass that propaganda along to Gen Z.

I was born in 1984, my frames of reference are different to *most* Millenials since I’m an early printing. There’s no real line between generations, it’s just one long linear track and it’s so much more diverse than a series of monoliths. But that fact makes it harder to divide and conquer.

While Millennials and Gen Z blame each other for ruining society, the same monsters that have been ruining society since before we were all born are laughing their asses off. Generational divides are made up, and that’s fine until they’re weaponized to keep us fighting over complete bullshit.
