Engineer, physicist & NASA astronaut Sally Ride was the first American woman in space, 1983. #WorldSpaceWeek 🚀 + Wrote/co-wrote 7 books to help encourage children to study #science + Co-founded Sally Ride Science to inspire young people in STEM & promote STEM literacy #WomenInSTEM
A historical photograph of Dr. Sally Kristen Ride (May 26, 1951 – July 23, 2012)—the first American woman in space—inside the flight deck of the Space Shuttle Challenger during the STS-7 mission in June 1983. Dr. Ride is positioned in the center of the frame from the chest up with a warm, engaged smile. She wears a light-blue NASA flight jumpsuit adorned with an American flag patch on her left shoulder, a NASA insignia on her chest, and a name tag that reads "SALLY." A lightweight communications headset rests on her curly, dark brown hair, with a thin microphone curving toward her mouth. Her right hand adjusts a component of the headset wire near her ear. The background is filled with the dense, intricate instrumentation of the shuttle's overhead and aft control panels, packed with gray switches, dials, and circuit breakers. The tight framing, soft interior lighting, and candid composition emphasize a focused yet calm atmosphere, documenting a milestone moment for women in STEM and space exploration.

🧵The iconic limestone pavements of Yorkshire, famously found around Malham Cove and Ingleborough, are spectacular post-glacial landscapes. Formed and exposed by the last Ice Age, these flat expanses of Carboniferous limestone feature blocks known as ‘clints’, separated by deep fissures
Twisleton Scar’s hawthorn trees are among the most photographed and recognisable natural landmarks in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Rather than being a single tree with a documented historical story or human-planted heritage, these hardy hawthorns are celebrated for their resilience, distinctive appearance and close connection to the ancient landscape. Their story is inseparable from the rugged limestone pavements of Twisleton Scar. Growing from thin soils between the limestone, the trees have endured centuries of harsh weather, strong winds and exposed conditions. Their twisted forms and weather-beaten branches are a reminder of nature’s ability to survive in challenging environments, making them an iconic symbol of the Yorkshire Dales. Scientist, inventor & women's rights campaigner Eunice Foote died #OTD in 1888. She was the first to demonstrate the greenhouse effect (heat-absorbing properties) of carbon dioxide (CO2), laying the scientific groundwork for #climatechange research. #WomenInSTEM
A warm-toned, sepia-style artistic illustration depicting Eunice Newton Foote, a 19th-century American scientist, viewed from behind in a softly lit laboratory setting. She stands facing away from the viewer, her back to us, wearing a period-appropriate mid-19th-century dress with puffed short sleeves, an off-the-shoulder neckline, and a full skirt. Her dark hair is styled in an elegant updo with soft curls and a decorative comb or ribbon at the back. She holds an open scientific notebook or paper in both hands at chest height, reading it attentively. The background shows a detailed Victorian-era lab interior with wooden shelves, glass apparatus including tall cylinders and tubes, a bell jar, a thermometer or barometer-like instrument, and other scientific equipment on tables and walls, evoking a sense of quiet discovery and early experimental science. Drawing by Carlyn Iverson, NOAA.
