I understand the point Owen is making but this is unhelpful. All nationalisms are inherently racist because they proceed from the idea that one group of people is innately superior to all others in some dimension, whether virtue or viniculture. Chauvinism isn't the response to a historic wrong.

It would be better for everyone if resolutions saying “Zionism is racism” also said, for example, “Hindutva is racism” and “Sinhala Buddhist nationalism is racism.” It might make Jews feel less singled out, but it would also force pro-Israel people to defend their ideology on its own terms.

A reminder: this is worse than judge-only trials because it means for many offences you will be tried not by a Circuit Judge but 2 or 3 non-lawyer volunteers given legal advice by someone else who may have no experience of practising criminal law in the CPS or a defence firm.

And courts will have the final say over where cases should be heard, preventing criminals accused of relatively minor crimes trying to game the system by electing a jury trial in an attempt to avoid prison.
