It'd be great to get Peltola back for Alaska. Republican grifters are killing my state.

Leland Lydecker @lelandlydecker.com · 15h

Really top tier design. It can't catch even the most marginally competent thief; but it's endlessly annoying for law-abiding users, even those who've been using automated checkouts for years. A++ job. This must be saving Kroger so much money.

Meanwhile, this amazing system flags me for doing things like bagging items I've just scanned, scanning and bagging too quickly, opening the bags so items can be placed inside, and taking out my wallet to pay...

120

Leland Lydecker @lelandlydecker.com · 15h

it can't seem to tell the different between me bagging an item I just scanned and me bagging an item I didn't scan. However, if someone were to accidentally miscount and enter that they were buying 4 avocados instead of the 5 in their produce bag, the system can't seem to tell.

120

Leland Lydecker @lelandlydecker.com · 15h

Not because it wouldn't theoretically spot someone bagging something they hadn't scanned (was anyone actually dumb enough to try that?) But because 1) it seems to no longer take item weight into account, and 2)

120

Leland Lydecker @lelandlydecker.com · 15h

I say it's "new" because, although it's been installed for a year or so, it's new compared to the automated checkouts. It involves a camera and a program that's supposed to recognize items going into bags that haven't been scanned. It's also astoundingly incompetent at that task.

Leland Lydecker @lelandlydecker.com · 15h

My local Kroger has a new* anti-theft system on their automated checkouts. And if this is any example of the vast powers of AI, we're totally safe from an AI takeover happening anytime soon.

Congratulations!!! A well-deserved win!

I think the best way to get around it at this point is to use a different search provider.

USSS CAT rocking the BNVD-FUSED. Those things are nuts. Binoculars, night vision, and a full color heads up display in one. They also have a rapid target acquisition feature that transmits weapon sight to the goggles, allowing shooting around cover without exposing a head. Photo cred: @apnews.com

People like us want to see ourselves in our heroes too. And the success of amazing authors like Martha Wells just goes to show how much of a market there is for that.

I write science fiction for people like myself and my friends. The people who've never really felt like they fit in. The weird ones. The ones who got bullied for not being normal enough.

110

Leland Lydecker @lelandlydecker.com · 03/10/2026

I've occasionally been asked why I don't write science fiction for "normal people." Leaving aside the fact that it IS science fiction for normal people, in my opinion, as long as those people aren't Status Quo Warriors...

We’re living through a time when far too many men — including privileged young men at a frat house in an Ivy League university — feel impunity when it comes to attacking women. I don’t think it unrelated to the impunity felt by the man now occupying the highest office in the land.

In my opinion, this alone is a great reason to vote for Peltola and Hill over their opponents. Sullivan and Begich have NOTHING in common with the rest of us here in Alaska, and they'll fuck us over without even thinking about it if it makes them more money.

"When it comes to issues like LGBTQ+ rights and abortion access, Peltola will be a far better advocate than Alaska’s current senator, a right-wing Republican." This is accurate. I don't agree with Peltola on everything, but I think she's a vastly better advocate for us than her main opponent.
