Not the healthiest looking Hummingbird Hawkmoth but nice to see one perched, warming up before it starts to feed. #teammoth

Well the clouds had other ideas for the solar eclipse today. Instead we have both a lunar and solar eclipse.

There was plenty to see at Lower Wood Nature Reserve yesterday. Many Silver-washed Fritillary and some Purple Hairstreak butterflies, although these stayed mainly high in the Oak tree canopy. @savebutterflies.bsky.social @britishdragonflies.bsky.social

Always great fun to watch. This male Pileated Woodpecker was in Fish Creek, Calgary, Canada. The drumming heard at the end was his partner. #birdsoftheworld

Had a very enjoyable day at Compton Downs, North Dorset today. Saw my first Glanville Fritillary along with Marsh Fritillary, Dingy Skipper, Adonis Blue. Twelve species in all. Yellowhammer and Cornbunting were also in good voice. @ukbutterflies.bsky.social #butterflies

What can you do when you're favourite wader or "shorebird" turns up in the next county? A short twitch to see the stunning Spotted Sandpiper at Earlswood Lakes, Warwickshire - just had to be done. Looks so small alongside the basking Mallard. #ukbirding

It would be rude not to go and see this beautiful female Hooded Merganser at Alvecott Pools, Warwickshire. Smaller than you might think, very noticeable when the Canada Goose steams past. #ukbirding #warksbirding

#birdsoftheworld Great Grey Shrike, Tindaya Plain, Fuerteventura. Formerly considered a subspecies of the Southern Grey Shrike this Canary Islands Grey Shrike "koenigi" is slightly smaller, darker and with a smaller white supercilium than the North European "excubitor" Great Grey Shrike subspecies.

Had a great time at Prestbury Hill and Daneway Banks today. At this time of year the birding goes quiet but butterflies take to the air. Many Chalkhill Blue, Small Blue and Silver-washed Fritillaries at Prestbury. No Large Blues at Daneway. @ukbutterflies.bsky.social

With an influx of birds from the continent it was nice to see a couple of White Wagtails at Clifton this evening along with fourteen Yellow Wagtails and a "White" Ruff. Oystercatchers and Redshank making up the numbers. #worcsbirds

There are many far better photos of the Cannock Chase Great Grey Shrike but I'm happy with this one. Especially as I had brought the wrong tripod so I had to balance the scope on my knee and hold the mobile to digiscope it. A beautiful bird which was calling and singing this evening.

Finally caught up with the Farmoor Reservoir Snow Geese today. They've not been around on my previous four visits. Now a self sustaining naturalized established species on the British list (C2). It was just a delight to watch 82 birds including several "Blue Goose" dark morphs. #birdsoftheworld

The Marbled Duck was relocated by Ian and Lawrence Machin this pm at Longdon Marsh WWT Roadside pool. It is un-ringed and fully winged and can be elusive but was viewed from 5m inside entrance gate. The drake Ring-necked Duck was again at Hill Court Screen. Image by Andy Warr.

Just going through some photos from earlier this year. These charismatic, cheeky birds soon show up when you bring out the sandwiches. Alpine Chough were in good company with White-winged Snowfinch, Alpine Accentors, Wallcreeper's and Common Rock Thrush - The magnificent Picos de Europa.
