I do favour a licensing system of some sort, don’t the mudlarks have to get permits for the Thames foreshore?

But another report suggests they excavated under supervision - they may have been acting responsibly, or not but we do not yet know.

Fine limestone is the go to material for lithographic prints, but I am struggling to reconcile the design elements. A training piece perhaps ….?

Another couple of images … most of the “etchings” are less than 1 mm deep.

The designs seem far too shallow for moulds … I’ll try to describe later.

I’ve now cleaned the central roundel … I’m now even more puzzled what this is! A student piece, test piece …. ?

An interesting limestone lithographic plate featuring coins and tokens. One of the images has been reversed to show a positive version. The central feature shows an image of Nostell Priory.

A special coin this one! A Viking imitation found in the Baltic states. It copies a radiate helmet type of Aethelred which itself copies a radiate military bust type of Constantine the Great that was struck in London c. AD 312. That’s a lot of history in a battered and pieced bit of silver …

Hmm. I wonder if a late 3rd century Sasanian hoard just came on the numismatic market? CNG's current auction has 3 drachms of Waharān I (not very common), and 5 of Waharān II on offer. If so, I bet there will be some fancy drachms at the NY International Numismatic Convention in January.
Silver Sasanian drachm coin with crowned king on obverse, fire altar with attendants on reverse. CNG Electronic Auction 576, lot 286.
Description from CNG: "SASANIAN KINGS. Vahrām (Bahram) I. AD 273-276. AR Drachm (27mm, 4.12 g, 3h). Style A/c. ‘Ctesiphon’ mint. Good VF."Silver Sasanian drachm coin with crowned king, queen, and prince on obverse, fire altar with attendants on reverse. CNG Electronic Auction 576, lot 290.
Description from CNG: "SASANIAN KINGS. Vahrām (Bahram) II, with Queen and Prince 4. AD 276-293. AR Drachm (29mm, 3.99 g, 3h). Style A. 'Ctesiphon' mint.
