At our Denman Island rally, Hugo and Louie brought me letters about what ferries mean to their families: safety, affordability and staying connected. ⛴️ Their voices remind us why this matters. Ferries are essential transportation. I’ll carry their message to Ottawa. #FairFederalFerryFunding

The Squamish Historical Society, who were in the news earlier this year for attempting to bring a residential school denialist speaker to their "speaker series" is having some kind of racist meltdown on Facebook. Nobody is asking them to erase anyone's history.
Bullshit poster saying "preserving one story should never require erasing another"A community cannot progress by replacing one form of exclusion with another.
When I became involved in local heritage work more than 20 years ago, I entered a system that was already insular, outdated, and shaped by a limited interpretation of history. Rather than preserving that culture unchanged, we worked to broaden participation and representation by recording oral histories, documenting community experiences, modernizing public engagement, and preserving voices that might otherwise have been lost.
Well before it became common practice, we invited Squamish Nation guest speakers because we believed Indigenous perspectives were essential to the conversation — not out of obligation, but because it was the appropriate and respectful course of action.
That work was important then, and it remains important today.
What is disheartening is seeing individuals who have devoted years to volunteering, organizing, preserving local history, and building community relationships addressed as though they were personally responsible for every historical injustice connected to the past.
Respect must be reciprocal.
If cultural or media protocols are expected, they should be communicated clearly and consistently so that those engaging in good faith are able to understand and honour them appropriately.
Squamish is strongest when all of its histories can be shared honestly and respectfully — Indigenous, pioneer, immigrant, industrial, and community alike.
Most people are not seeking conflict. They are seeking fairness, connection, and a shared future grounded in mutual respect.
That is the conversation worth having.
