Also, sincere thanks to the always spectacular @thejordache.bsky.social and @emilydaluga.bsky.social for seeing this series through to its conclusion and shaping this story into what it is. It's been such a thrill getting to work with you on these books, and I really can't say it enough🖤

Thanks to everyone who's already read this far, and loved this pair of horrible trans disaster wizards as much as I do. I can't wait for you to see how Rat and Harker's story ends, and while I can't say a lot, I can promise that there are still a few more twists ahead (and, even more magic,

A SINGLE BRUTAL FATE is officially out🖤 🗡️

A graphic showing the cover of a SINGLE BRUTAL FATE. The cover shows Rat, a white non-binary teenager in a dark cloak, and Harker, a white trans boy of the same age with long, dark hair, hurrying down a dramatically lit stone stairway. Rat holds a ring of keys, and the two are surrounded by magic and wisps of spell fire.

I'm fully open to queries again! I'm still extremely interested horror and thrillers, so if you've seen my genre-specific MSWL it still stands, but I'm also looking for adult, YA, and MG in a range of genres--you can find my full MSWL at www.leepaigeobrien.com/manuscript-w... #amquerying

A SINGLE BRUTAL FATE author copies are in🖤 🗡️

A copy of A SINGLE BRUTAL FATE, a YA fantasy novel with two trans-masc sorcerers on the cover. The book is surrounded by flowers, skulls, a lantern, and various clutter.

The dedication page of A SINGLE BRUTAL FATE, held open with a gold ribbon bookmark and surrounded by yellow mums. The dedication reads, "To the trans kids who've had to make themselves at home in the dark, but still hope for daylight. You deserve to exist in the sun. You deserve everything."

A BRUTAL FATE Valentines snippet for those who celebrate🖤 🗡️

A quote graphic that reads, "Out of all the enemies Rat had managed to make, they still thought of Harker Blakely as the worst. He was ruthless and clever and ran on an ungodly combination of black coffee and ambition. They were also pathetically in love with him."

Now that we’re less than a month out from A SINGLE BRUTAL FATE’s release, I’m going to be posting a bit more. This is honestly a really strange time to have a book coming out as a trans author, so if you can’t do lighter content & shouting about books right now, please feel free to mute me <3

...and, of course, this is by no means a definitive list! I'm always excited to be surprised by new submissions and see stories I hadn't expected, so if you think we might be a good fit and you're querying an adult or YA horror or thriller, please feel free to reach out!

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 13/01/2025

anything with a strange, unsolved crime at it's center, or a cold case that's become shrouded in speculation and lore; casts that are bound together by old secrets (and lies, and resentments); old groups of friends drawn back together by a mystery

150

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 13/01/2025

see above for Rich People Being Horrible, but anything with an element of class critique, or that has a glossy and well-mannered surface (and claws underneath); stories that are intricately plotted and full of twists; imposters and identity games; dwindling casts and closed-circle mysteries;

130

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 13/01/2025

or anything that can keep me guessing. Also: Thrillers with a strong sense of place or an atmospheric setting; diverse thrillers, and especially queer and disabled domestic thrillers; thrillers set in cut-throat professional or creative fields; morally grey MCs;

140

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 13/01/2025

Thrillers: I'm on the lookout for pacy, commercial thrillers, and psychological thrillers and domestic suspense especially. As above, I'm always excited to see a new take on an old setup, or genre-savvy writing that can twist the story in a new and unexpected direction, and love a mystery

240

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 13/01/2025

nerdy and horrifying deep dives that will absolutely ruin an obscure or seemingly mundane topic I hadn't known I should be afraid of; anything that has me rooting for the cast to survive (even if we know they can't); "I'm not trapped with the killer, the killer is trapped with me" energy

220

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 13/01/2025

upsetting architecture (haunted house? cursed hotel? abandoned castle? yes to all); anything that feels like a creepypasta--viral rituals, lost/cursed media, horror lore that sounds like it crawled out of an internet forum in the early 2000s; anything that captures the feel of found footage;

240

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 13/01/2025

Also always looking for new spins on classic horror premises; anything with buckets of atmosphere or edge-of-your-seat tension; body horror (and especially body horror from queer, disabled, and BIPOC voices); rich people being horrible; horror that's glittery, opulent, and rotten underneath;

120

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 13/01/2025

Horror: I'm always eager to find queer horror (of both the "critically engages with horror as a lens for queer experiences" variety and the "just came here to make a splattery gay mess" kind. If it's queer, unhinged, and going to keep me awake at night, I'd love to see it in my inbox)

Hey! (haha, feeling called out but you're not wrong lol)

120

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 14/11/2024

I'm usually a bit scarce online, so you'll probably hear from me with sporadic agenting updates, book news, and general Shouting About Books📚 Excited to find the writing community on here! (And, if that's you, feel free to say hey!)

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 14/11/2024

On the author side, I've also got a YA fantasy duology about a pair of trans rivals at a magic school with some secrets (If you're up for a vicious two-book long slowburn, or just think that more trans kids should go to wizard college, the next book, A SINGLE BRUTAL FATE is out in March💀✨)

Lee O'Brien @leepaigeobrien.bsky.social · 14/11/2024

On the agent side, I represent commercial fiction in adult, MG, and YA--I work in a range of genres, but I'm always especially excited for fantasy, horror, thrillers, and anything that can keep me guessing, and have a soft spot for queer books. I'm closed to queries for now, but will update here!
