There are so many incredible titles on this list, but I’m especially proud of YOUNG HAG by Isabel Greenberg, which I had the total joy of editing. If you haven’t read it, please do! It’s funny, poignant, and just so unique and rad. I’m so glad it exists and is getting this incredible recognition!! ✨

Here is a handout I made for my kid’s class last week, when I went in to talk to them about making books. I Frankensteined together a bunch of art I already had to make it, and filled other stuff in. But it was a big hit, so I’m sharing it here in case you know any kids interested in making books!
Let’s make books handout for kids, detailing various roles in making books; author, illustrator, editor, designer, marketing/publicity, librarians/booksellers/teachers and finally readers. Two worksheets, “be a writer” with a writing mad lib, and “be an illustrator” with some drawing prompts. Two more worksheets, “be an editor” with editorial marks to practice on some editable sentences, and “be a cover designer” with four books needing covers. Two final handouts: “be a librarian, bookseller or teacher” with six kids and six books to match, and “be a reader” with preferences in genre and types of books to narrow your reading preferences to help find more books to enjoy.

A SINGLE BRUTAL FATE is finally out in the world!! Lee has crafted such a twisting and pacey read here, and it’s so thrilling to see how this duology ends. It’s been such a joy to get to work on, and a series I just love so much as both an editor and reader. Go check it out!!! 🐦‍⬛🗡️✨🖤

A SINGLE BRUTAL FATE is officially out🖤 🗡️
A graphic showing the cover of a SINGLE BRUTAL FATE. The cover shows Rat, a white non-binary teenager in a dark cloak, and Harker, a white trans boy of the same age with long, dark hair, hurrying down a dramatically lit stone stairway. Rat holds a ring of keys, and the two are surrounded by magic and wisps of spell fire.

Happy #MSWL Day! I only accept agented submissions, but wanted to get into the fun. I'm an editor over at Chronicle Books, and I would love to find more MG novels this year—especially ones that feature queer kiddos with big feelings, are a KNIVES OUT-style mystery, or use horror as metaphor! 🏳️‍🌈🕵️😈

Today, on Shirley Jackson’s birthday, let’s all marvel at one of the greatest opening paragraphs ever written (from THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE)
“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met nearly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”

We need to keep talking about how weird it is for people to think they should have a say in reading choices for anyone's kids but their own. You're not in charge of what other people's children eat or wear or when they go to bed. Why on earth would you get to choose what they read?

A Single Brutal Fate
Two young sorcerers in cloaks descending a gothic castle staircase lit by lanterns. They are holding hands with magical flames emanating from their hands. The closer sorcerer has a ring of keys around his hand. Outside the window a raven sits on a gnarled branch. At the top of the stairs a wraith in a tattered cloak with a glowing skeleton looks out of a doorway. Bisexual lighting (orange teal pink and red) abound
