👇 Climate change heatwaves like the one last month and next week will make any kind of spring-summer fieldwork difficult, except in early mornings/evenings. Ok for bird surveys before 8 am, but butterfly/pollinator protocols specify hottest time of day (10am to 5pm). Next week that will be 35C.

Incomplete but not a ruin (National Trust, Lyvedon New Bield) #Fensterfreitag #nationaltrust #northamptonshire
The Elizabethan structure was never completed. When the owner, Tresham, died owing money the workers simply downed tools and left. The National Trust have recently replaced the wooden lintels to make the structure safe at a cost of c £153k. From above the building the floor plan / outline resembles a holy cross. The Treshams were arch Catholics in an era when practising Catholicism was treated as treason.

Eels are classic. And also classical! In fact, they're the only fish mentioned by name in Homer's Iliad. In Book 21, Achilles kills a Trojan in the River Scamander. Like ya do. And immediately, the eels begin to nibble on the dead man's kidneys. Nibble. 'Cause eels are dainty. 🗃️🧪
Meme. Ancient Greek-style art of 2 warriors fighting in front of a wall, with the Trojan horse in the background. The scene is orange tinted, with the warriors in black. The warrior on the right wears a shield, helmet, & a swashbuckling cloak. He holds a spear and is lunging forward to stab his opponent. The warrior on the left has no armor. He has an arrow in his ankle, and so is probably Achilles. He has a sword raised, but it's not going to help. He's about to be stabbed, and he can't even reach his foe. The scene looks very much like a Mortal Combat level.

Behind the men are the walls of the city, with the head of a giant horse rearing above the wall. It seems to watching the fight like a Pokemon battle. It's muzzle points towards the warrior on the right as if to say, "That's my dawg." Achilles, on the left, feels cold fingers around his heart. He had hoped the Horse would save him, but his hopes have been betrayed. The Horse is a cruel mistress.

@europeanspod.bsky.social well worth listening to BBC podcast on school dinners. It seems that clubs running at lunch reduce time for food down to 15 mins. Students always then going to choose a less healthy option. How squeezed are lunchtimes across the EU? How does school day time affect this?

Let's talk about eels & dams. 'Cause dams are a problem for eels now, but they haven't always been. Eels can live out of water for a while, & travel overland. Young eels climb up & around small waterfalls as they migrate. And so many medieval dams weren't a problem for them. 1/7 🗃️
Meme. Painting of two eels in the water. They are yellow, and so is the background, so it's unclear if these are yellow eels, or eels seen through a yellow filter. They don't much care, I would guess. The eels are dark on top, and are casting shadows below them, such that they seem like eel sandwiches stuffed into the bread of darkness. They deserve names, so we shall call one of the Olivort and the other Trovilo. You can decide which is which.

One is looking to the left, and one is looking back over its metaphorical shoulder to the right. Neither is looking at you, and I think that's a choice. You should maybe spend some time thinking about why, and then try to move forward and live your life as the sort of person that eels would want to look at.
