Our results underscore complex interactions between watershed geology, vegetation, and climate, with implications for understanding past and future carbon fluxes in a warming Arctic. A big thank you to my coauthors, collaborators and reviewers for their help!

🌱 Vegetation in each watershed “locked in” old carbon and reduced erosion and transport. In more sparsely-vegetated Pleistocene landscapes, there was more movement of old carbon into the lakes.

We found that: ⏰ Carbon sitting in these lake sediments can be hundreds to 10,000 years older than when it was deposited. 🪨 Ancient carbon within rocks (petrographic) is the main control on age offset magnitude.

Arctic environments store vast amounts of ancient carbon, and understanding how it moves as the climate changes is key to predicting future carbon release. We use radiocarbon age offsets as tracers of carbon cycling in five Alaskan and Siberian lakes over the past 20,000 years.

Ultimately, the carbon sequestration potential of this and other Arctic lakes is highly dependent upon the rate of sediment delivery.

This unique pairing of lake and hillslope sediment records allowed us to investigate millennial-scale changes in carbon accumulation across a watershed.

Check out our new paper about carbon, productivity and climate over 15,800 years in central Alaska. Out in @aaarjournal.bsky.social this paper pairs new sediment records from Eight Mile Lake with soil cores from the adjacent hillslope. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

A 15,800 year record of productivity, carbon accumulation and environmental change at Eight Mile Lake and its catchment, central Alaska
Despite their efficient burial of organic carbon (OC), the role of high-latitude lakes in storing and processing OC under changing climates is poorly understood. We investigate a 15,800 year sedime...
