The days are getting much shorter and it’s now a race to get home before the sun sets. But this little female Downy Woodpecker arrived just in time to forage just before sunset! #Birds 🪶
A female downy woodpecker perches on the side of a spruce tree trunk.
It is just before sunset and the sky is orange behind her. She is black and white while the tree trunk is quite dark. There are also some green blurry spruce branches showing in the background.

Today my #ornithology students spent their lab focusing on bird ID from specimens. They got points (and candy) for correct IDs. How many can you get correct? (These photos aren’t necessarily ideal for the task, but perhaps you’re up for the challenge? 1 #teaching #HigherEd @usaskartsci.bsky.social

Clay-coloured Sparrows are hatching & boy are they tiny! These birds have a rapid tepro cycle: incubation 10-14 days, fledging in 7-10 days - before the young can fly! They belly out of the nest & scoot around on the ground bc ground nesting is so dangerous! 🇨🇦🪶🪺🐣🧪 @usaskartsci.bsky.social

A very tall black and white wading bird with ridiculously long pink legs is starting to run away from a very intense looking black and white and orange wader with blue legs and a long upturned bill. The blue-legs has its head down as it charges, looking very much like a dinosaur. The chase continues as the black and white pink-legged bird is taking giant strides toward the left of the frame, still pursued by the shorter Avocet.
