My photo shows a fragment of concrete with a fake cave painting by the street artist known as Banksy. Using black marker pen it depicts an outlined figure pushing a shopping trolley, facing left. In the background is a horned bison (?) oulined in black and coloured red. Two arrows pierce its hide. Known as ‘Peckham Rock’, this piece of hoax cave art was installed in the Roman Britain gallery of the British Museum in 2005, together with an authentic-looking label, placed below it, which even included an accession number (see label text below). Peckham Rock was loaned to the British Museum for their 2018/19 exhibition ‘I object’, curated by Ian Hislop, which is where I photographed it.

The hoax label reads:

This finely preserved example of primitive art dates from the Post-Catatonic era and is thought to depict early man venturing towards the out-of-town hunting grounds. The artist responsible is known to have created a substantial body of work across the South East of England under the moniker Banksymus Maximus but little else is known about him. Most art of this type has unfortunately not survived. The majority is destroyed by zealous municipal officials who fail to recognise the artistic merit and historical value of daubing on walls.

Happy Saturday everyone! Here’s a 3,100 year-old Shang Dynasty bronze wine vessel in the form of an elephant 🐘❤️ The larger elephant’s trunk is used as a spout and the baby elephant standing on its back serves as a lid handle. Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows a lidded bronze container shaped as a baby elephant standing on a larger elephant’s back. The bronze surface has a light green patina. The vessel was made for serving wine which was poured from the trunk. The baby elephant serves as a knob for the vessel’s lid. The bodies of the elephants are covered with patterns cast in low relief which are derived from mythical creatures often found on Shang vessels, including dragons and taotie masks. A taotie is a frontal animal-like face with a pair of staring eyes, a nose, and jaw.

Dimensions: H x W x D (overall): 17.2 x 10.7 x 21.4 cm (6 3/4 x 4 3/16 x 8 7/16 in)

Shang dynasty, Late Anyang period, c. 1200-1100 BC
