It always gets to me that many survivors are still relatively young, the last residential school closed only 30 years ago so they can be my peers parents and grandparents. Both the trauma and a general lack of opportunity to develope life skills (like cooking) have generational repercussions.

It’s our National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The day is meant for reflection on the abhorrent part of our past that was the Residential Schools/ Boarding Schools that subjected kidnapped Indigenous children to a brutal regimen that was meant to “kill the Indian, save the child.”

It was just clinging to the building not really moving and looked so big and exotic so my mind went immediately to 'it must be too cold of a climate for it'. It would appear however that they're a native species in ontario although I feel like our wildlife usually isn't so flashy.

Reminds me of this big moth I saw in June(?) This year. I was so sure it couldn't be a native species that I emailed the local butterfly conservatory to come get it XD . I believe it's a Cecropia Moth.
Moth with red legs and mostly broen wings featuring what looks like a half moon at the center and a sophisticated pattern along the edges clings to a stucco like wall at ground level with a door in the background. Moth from previous picture but from a more top down angle showing its fuzzy body and red section between its wings (forhead region if mapped to humans)Further away picture of moth next to house keys.

Is it just me or are US government officials in cahoots to gaslight Canadians? Also, trade war seems appropriate. No physical violence luckily, but a war never the less. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

Can you clarify your point? It seems like both you and OP are saying that both cycling and transit are important for more sustainable cities and I don't understand your disagreement. In north american cities which were often developed post car walkaility and even cyclability aren't guarenteed.

🧵 I'm a big fan of making it easier for parents to care for their kids, but this is *not* how to do it! What to know, with my 2 cents: 🔹️The plan "would create the only federal subsidy to pay parents to stay home and raise their children." The idea came from the... www.nytimes.com/2026/09/05/u...

Early on in COVID we were talking to a friend outside, & an ambulance siren started going off near us. We discussed the Apocalyptic Vibes of the situation And then he said "Yeah it's funny & all, right? But it's when the sirens STOP that you really gotta worry." And I mean, facts.

Arguably mobility devices would need to meet more stringent safety requirements which would extend to the battery. If not already the case, could see a scenario where batteries get re-used for a less at risk demographic after a certain period of time since battery fire risk seems to be age related.

I think these devices are especially challenging because they are relatively small and thus easily stolen which reduces willingness to store in more public spaces but also storage outside in Canada means they are subject to freezing which (I'm pretty sure) can compromise the batteries faster.

The real question is can places drag their feet for the next couple years and expect things to return to normal or will these names stick as part of a new, less democratic future. It is clear the system of democracy that the US was always so proud of is being tested, but will it crumble?

I think who adopts or doesn't adopt the new names is a small part of the larger problem. I'm not an expert but re-naming places is a common tactic when destabilizing countries. Whether it is invaders changing the official language over night or re-naming capital cities it is a way of erasing history

Micah makes the very good point that although google is showing the name change first, it is likely just because they update their data more frequently (which is part of why google maps is so popular - because it's very up to date).

I think often about how different media is in Canada and the US. It really shows up not just in how this latest lake ontario bs is front page news here, but also a one sided news cycle comes across in increasingly tone-deaf american ambassadors, trade negotiators etc.

There's a bunch of postdoc funding now where you have yo be applying fron outside Canada (maybe even from the US specifically). As a recent grad I now have a job as a field technician which is the definition of entry level in industry and only uses my education in the loosest way.

I just finished watching North of North (which was SO sweet) and now I’m wondering what people who live in the Arctic Circle sleep during the midnight sun. I remember there being blackout curtains in the summer in Scotland, but it’s not like that’s Arctic. Do people just sleep whenever?

If this is about the north west passage in the near term it's actually becoming less passable because what were once large ice sheets are now broken up chunks of ice piling up wherever the wind sends them. But they can dream I guess?

Doesn't a portion of grants also typically go directly to the university itself for overhead? (E.g. nominally paying for building space/ maintenance, software licenses etc etc).

I think with a lot of brain things, like being on the spectrum but also addictive tendencies within families etc it's not a big deal until you have some sort of stressor and the coping skills society offers you/ the coping ability they expect you to have just isn't there?

I think it probably had an effect if people stayed in europe post war (i.e. everyone was working through their first hand lived experience) or went to places like Canada & US (war hardships were much less severe). But again each case would be different. (Ptsd as a diagnosis came about in the 80's).

But now looking at the kids and now my generation there are signs (and it has been mostly daughters/grand daughters so as women less likely to get diagnosed as neurodivergent) many of those behaviours align with neurodivergence so he probably had both things together.

In my case, my one grandfather went to europe as a soldier. then returned to Canada, married etc and he would have these huge meltdowns. Trying to understand it we thought 'maybe he saw such aweful things & he just can't tolerate people getting upset over small stuff'.

Definitely trauma like that can really mess people up, ( and even impact which genes express in future generations). But I think saying 'oh it's just war trauma' may have masked other underlying sensory issues for people from that generation because they had that 'just get on with it' mindset.

The thing about my grandparents generation is that they were all at least young teen by WW2 so for the men especially PTSD is also probably a contributor to who they were as adults. (Ahem, my mom's dad who would have complete meltdowns which seemed like ptsd but insisted on eating at 5 sharp).

My dad spent every lunch hour of his employed life going for an 8k run and gets super stressed when he can't go running on days off (especially holidays if he also has to socialize). Despite this he's constantly herding us all on walks, but same, he comes uo totally normal on online assessments.

We had some of my BF's friends up to my family cottage with my parents. It was very validating when one of the friends said how they enjoyed my dads adhd moments. This man has come out completely normal on online assessments but he must do certain parts of his day in a very specific order.

Anyways, I think I was especially paying attention because I just finished reading 'Fossil Feud' by @maggienorthauthor.bsky.social which I loved (set in the Montana fossil scene) but I keep wondering why all these steminist romances have tall male protagonists... where are the short kings? 3/3

Just another voice on the Internet @lclkrist.bsky.social · 15/08/2026
So, I kept calling them 'nano T-Rex' to which my BF said absolutely not, needs a better name since it can't be just smaller tyrant lizard kings. Then he realized actually, no, Nanotyrannus as the 'short kings' of the dino world seems pretty great! 2/3

Okay so I saw a video about the Nanotyrannus and was talking about it with my BF. Basically as I understand it small T-Rex had been largely considered to be juvenile T-Rex but now researchers looking at some of these skeletons have posited that they're actually adults (e.g. house cats vs. Tigers)1/3

Gatekeeping by women is absolutely a thing (and it's partially a trauma response imo), but also fields get re-evaluated as being 'easier' (thus getting lower prestige, lower pay etc) once a critical mass of women enter it. In many ways you can never win. Presumably the same with racism.

The autism comment might be worth mentioning to your accomodations office? It seems like a jump from having transparent written instructions in a course or other accessibility aids to 'must use LLM's'. I feel like neurodivergence is probably over represented in profs generally so maybe some denial?
010
Just another voice on the Internet @lclkrist.bsky.social · 14/08/2026
I wonder if there can be a monitoring approach for student performance on core courses. It seems like students who use LLM's forbthingd like assignments struggle significantly with getting started on things like exam questions and it might be quantifiable to argue for more caution.

Apparently now that technology allows super fast pictures researchers have now realized that bats do not have the amazing spatial awareness that was hypothesized to allow them to fly in big groups - instead they run into eachother a ton but are light and do also don't do much damage/recover quickly
